This frigid AF winter season calls for stylish outerwear to keep us cozy and warm. Before splurging on a pricey purchase, though, why not plan ahead with the help of a top fashion influencer? Trust us, it makes the process so much easier.
We’re still weeks away from Fashion Month’s February kick-off, which will unveil all the haute runway trends that our futures hold. But frankly, our everyday wardrobes call for comfortable coats, wearable jackets and the cold-weather RTW garments rocked by our favorite online fashionistas.
Thankfully, these fashion babes shared their favorite outwear trends to shop for flawless winter style. Among them? Brit + Co.‘s Senior Style Editor, Zoey Washington; a Paris-based fashion designer and founder of Laita BA-Paris, Luli Rodriguez Gugliotta; and three of our most-beloved fashion bloggers — Lily Sykora of The Afternoon Edit, Reese Nguyen of Oui to Weekends and Jill Lansky of The August Diaries.
Don’t miss out on what they had to say about their favorite winter style trends in outerwear!
5.) Luli Rodriguez Gugliotta, Fashion Designer: The Poncho
Meet Luli Rodriguez Gugliotta, an Argentinian fashion designer and co-founder of the Parisian line of luxury handbags, Laita BA-Paris. Keeping with the traditional roots of her ethically sourced designs, Luli selected an outerwear garment with origins in her home country of Argentina: the poncho.
Luli explains: “My favorite fashion trend for 2018 is the poncho — a traditional garment from Argentina, my country, used by the South American cowboys, or gauchos. [Ponchos] are fashionable and comfortable, worn like a dress in the summer or like a coat in the winter.”
Expect to see many varieties of the draped garment this season, from formal capes in evening wear, to wrap-like styles of the bohemian staple item. Oh, and if you’re dealing with that East Coast chill, note that the snuggliest of the bunch are made of cashmere.
4.) Lily Sykora, Fashion Blogger + Influencer: Oversized Plaid Car Coat
First of all, yes. One look at the fashionista behind Afternoon Edit proves that our muse is killing it with cool-girl style. Retro plaids will continue to shine as the go-to print among street-style stars, along with boxy, menswear-inspired designs that are great for layering. Selena Gomez herself has been spotted wearing a longer version of the trend.
“My absolute favorite fashion trend in outerwear has been the plaid menswear-inspired trench.” Lily explains. “It can be worn with so many different outfits, but I’m a total denim girl. I love wearing it with a graphic tee and a good pair of statement jeans.”
As you can see, Lily opted for a knee-grazing car coat in the season’s favorite print. It lends her all-gray ensemble a certain haphazard sophistication without sacrificing her signature style. We’re all about oversized garments of all lengths, from blazers to ankle-grazing dusters, in the season’s must-have plaid.
3.) Reese Nguyen, Fashion Influencer + Blogger: The Teddy Coat
As one of the coldest years on the books, couldn’t we all go for the warmth of a plush teddy coat?
Reese Nguyen, the blogger and founder of Oui To Weekends, states: “My favorite fashion trend for 2018 is the teddy coat! It’s the perfect fashion-meets-function piece. With top brands like MaxMara creating iconic oversized teddy coats, you know that you’re achieving one of this season’s top trends as well as staying warm in the winter. Win-win! I will definitely be wearing teddy coats in all shapes and sizes all season long — in every color I can get my hands on!”
As one of Pinterest’s most-pinned styles according to Refinery 29, you can bet that you’ll be seeing your fair share of the deliciously cozy coat. They also gave us a heads up that faux-fur textures are on fire RN, so rest assured that these cuddly bad boys suit multiple price-points.

2.) Jillian Lansky, Fashion Influencer + Blogger: Menswear-Inspired Checked Blazer or Coat
We have no words to describe the perfection of style queen Jill Lansky’s Insta-perfect aesthetic. As the Founder and Editor-in-chief of the Toronto-based fashion blog, The August Diaries, Jill’s look is self-described as European-chic-meets-West-Coast-sophistication — to a T. All it takes is one look at her Instagram account, @theaugustdiaries, to spot her favorite upcoming 2018 fashion trend.
As you can see in her artfully styled snaps, shorter lengths of boxy, menswear-inspired garments — like her checked blazer-meets-coat above — were made for her signature aesthetic. In her own words, “Whether it’s a long coat or a chic blazer, it adds a masculine, cool-factor to any outfit. It’s also the easiest way to dress up an outfit — add it to jeans, a tee + booties for day, or throw it over a silk slip dress for the evening.”
Along with the many car coats and blazers to hit the street-style scene of late, boxy, oversized, menswear-inspired designs in throwback plaids are among our favorites. Keep your eyes peeled for double-breasted designs like the beauty seen on Jill.
1.) Zoey Washington, Senior Style Editor of Brit + Co.: The Revamped Trench
Hold onto your hats — we’ve got a legit fashion legend in our wake! We stopped over at Brit + Co. to score the insider’s scoop from their Senior Style Editor, Zoey Washington. Her creative direction of the beloved blog’s style section has helped us identify and shape countless beloved fashion trends of late.
In her limitless sartorial wisdom, Zoey dishes: “My favorite fashion trend for 2018 is the revamped trench coat. I love a good coat, but I particularly love a trend that can work past a single season and this fits the bill. Though classic styles will always have a place in my heart, I am really drawn to the new interpretations of the wardrobe staple for Spring 2018. Clearly, I am not living the kind of life where I can drop thousands on a decked out trench, but if I DID have that kind of dough, trust and believe I would opt for this Loewe stunner from their Spring/Summer 2018 collection.”
We simply couldn’t have put it better ourselves. While the classic trench coat is best-identified by its shin-grazing length, modern designs have incorporated deconstructed accents, statement sleeves, and non-traditional flair for serious fashion edge.
