The winter season is finally upon us. It calls for hot chocolate with marshmallows, nights snuggled in while watching a good movie, snow storms, big comfy sweaters, and our absolute favorite — winter beauty trends. Although they are always changing, the one winter beauty trend that remains constant is a statement lip. Whether you’re a gal who enjoys doing soft, natural makeup or one who wants to be completely covered in glitter, a bold lip is what truly brings a look together.
This season we’ve seen celebrities rocking a variety of bold colors, and now it’s time for you to do the same! If you’re not used to adding some color in your beauty routine, take this winter as an opportunity to try something new. To help, we’ve put together the Top 5 winter 2018 lip colors. From classic red and rosewood, bronze metallic and browny nudes to a bold and vampy plum, there’s sure to be a color for everyone! Find a few of our favorite lip products from each color category below.
5.) Classic Red
Would it really be winter without a classic red lip? Red is an iconic color regardless of the season, but it tends to make a bold statement specifically in the winter. That’s also why we have to recommend Fenty Beauty’s Stunna Lip Paint in Uncensored. This liquid lipstick comes in a universal red shade that is meant to compliment every skin tone and provides a soft matte finish said to last 12 hours!
Liquid lipstick not your favorite? We suggest Clinique’s Pop Matte Lip Colour + Primer in Icon Pop — a deep classic red that provides full-coverage in just one swipe with a similar creamy matte finish as the Stunna Lip Paint.
If you’re unsure of what shade of red you prefer, check out Bésame Cosmetics’ Classic Color Lipstick. The company is retro-inspired, with each shade influenced by those worn by coveted Hollywood starlets of the ’20s to ’50s. Their Classic Color Lipstick is available in nine different shades of red (yes, nine) including blue-based Bésame Red and warm Red Hot Red, meaning there’s a shade for everyone!
Over the last couple of years, we’ve seen rosewood become popular among beauty companies. With a reddish brown hue, the color is bold while still having a muted quality about it, making it more ideal for daily wear.
You can find this shade available in your standard lipstick form from Anastasia Beverly Hills’ Matte Lipstick collection in the shade Rosewood or for a transfer proof option, it can be found in a liquid lipstick from Too Faced’s Melted Matte collection in the shade Suck It. However, our favorite is Burberry’s Liquid Lip Velvet in the shade Dark Rosewood. Though on the pricey side, this non-drying formula is perfect for those cold winter months while providing stunning pigmentation in a whipped texture that truly is velvet-like.
3.) Bronze Metallic
When companies first began releasing metallic lip products, we were pretty excited. What was once only just a look for editorial shoots became a summer trend last year and has since taken off. Companies began releasing multiple shades of metallic lipstick, but the stand out color has been bronze metallic. The shade is bold while providing an extra bit of dimension that can help make lips look fuller. Smashbox’s Always On Matte Metallic Liquid Lipstick in Bold Digger is a stunning metallic shade that dries down to a semi-matte, transfer proof finish.
For those interested in a more glossy version, we highly recommend Kevyn Aucoin’s Molten Liquid Lipstick in Bronze, which provides a glass-like finish, perfect for wear on its own or layered on top of other lipsticks. This one is stunning for a night on the town or if you’re really looking to make a statement!
For something a bit more subtle, check out Urban Decay’s Vice Lipstick in Conspiracy. A plum-bronze metallic, Conspiracy provides the sparkle you didn’t know you wanted in a lipstick.
2.) Browny Nude
Finding the perfect shade of nude can be a difficult task. With peach, pink and brown undertones, it requires some trial and error to find the shade that will end up being your holy grail. For the winter, however, browny nudes are in!
Need an introduction to the shade? Try Nars’ Powermatte Lip Pigment in Slow Ride. The company’s new formula is thin, but packs a pigmented punch and dries down to one of the most stunning finishes we’ve seen in a liquid lip. Want something a bit more hydrating? BareMinerals’ Gen Nude Matte Liquid Lip Color in Om has a similar lightweight texture to Powermatte’s, but is also primer-infused with moisturizing ingredients so your lips are never dry.
Another best selling browny nude that we had to include is Urban Decay’s Vice Lipstick in 1993. The shade is a tad deeper in color than Nars and BareMinerals, but is formulated to nourish and soften the lips. With ingredients like aloe vera, jojoba, avocado and babassu oils, as well as vitamins C and E, Urban’s Vice Lipsticks are some of the best, and your lips will thank you later.
Similar to how it’s necessary to have a classic red lip for the winter, it’s also necessary to have a bold, deep plum shade. While berry is a typical popular shade for the fall, you’ll find many people wanting to turn away from the red undertones and gravitate towards the purple found in plum. With Huda Beauty’s Liquid Matte Lipstick in Material Girl, you have a fierce plum in a transfer-proof formula that can be bold enough for any work function or date night. If you’re looking to feel bold and dangerous, we suggest a deeper shade like Buxom’s Big & Sexy Bold Gel Lipstick in Vampy Plum.
Want to have a bit more fun with your lip? Lancôme’s Matte Shaker in Plum Plum Girl is sure to be your new best friend. Shake the bottle like you would a cocktail and upon opening the container, its cushion applicator will pick up the perfect amount for you to apply. Extremely lightweight yet comfortable, the Matte Shaker’s never make your lips look dried out. Trust us when we say you’ll quickly become obsessed with this formula.
