Veterinarian Refuses Service To Police Dog, But He Gets The Last Laugh

Refused Service

“What in the blazes do you mean?” Joel said as he felt his anger rising. This couldn’t be true, could it? The woman wasn’t being fair, and she knew it. “I mean exactly what I said – I can’t help you.” The unkind woman said.

Joel balled up his fists at the veterinarian, but he knew better than to start anything in the office.

He would only lose if he tried anything now.

Anger

Anger flooded his system as he picked up his dog and headed for the door. He had never been so annoyed in his life. He gently put the pitbull in his car on top of a soft blanket and soothed her.

He stared deep into his blue eyes and said, “It’s okay. We’ll find a way for you to get treatment, baby.”

He had to do anything to find a way to help his best friend.

Excuses

Joel drove back home, furious about what had happened. But he knew he would find a way to make sure the old veterinarian learned the error of her ways.

Her reasons for not treating him were absurd. He thought that all veterinarians took an oath to help animals in need.

It seemed like she was looking for excuses not to help him.

A Problematic Breed

What did “problematic breed” mean anyway?

Since when did they choose to turn down certain dogs just because of their breed?

It didn’t make sense to him, but it didn’t matter – he knew that they’d get the last laugh.

Getting Home

He knew he had to come up with a plan to ensure that his best friend would get the treatment he needed and that the veterinarian would pay for what she did to them. He got home and took Keto inside.

His heart broke seeing the dog in pain, but there wasn’t much else he could do. Furious, he stormed upstairs.

He knew what to do. He passed by his cupboard and saw his uniform sticking out.

A Plan

A grin formed across his face as a plan formulated in his head. He knew exactly what he could do to make sure she regretted it. He would go back there the next day with less than good intentions.

His dog wouldn’t last for much longer if he wasn’t treated.

He was doing all of this in the name of love for his companion. He couldn’t fail.

Heading Back

The next day, Joel woke up and got ready to take his dog back to the vet. But this time, he had an ace up his sleeve. He dressed differently this time before loading his pup inside and driving there.

Once he arrived, the man behind the desk barely recognized him.

It was as if he was a different man.

Going In

“You don’t have an appointment.” The receptionist began, but he saw the look on Joel’s face. “Go right ahead,” he said meekly as Joel puffed out his chest.

He smiled and thanked the man before heading straight into the veterinarian’s office.

He knew that the old woman wasn’t ready for his “surprise.”

Laughing Turned To Begging

He barged in through the door of the office and stared at her. “Who do you think you are?” She asked before looking up. But as soon as her eyes fell on him, she froze at her desk.

It felt like she had mocked him the day before, but now she was sorry after seeing his uniform.

He knew that he would get the last laugh for what she did.

Over the next few weeks, Joel grew attached to the stray named Keto. He had the mildest temperament and was even sweet. He needed to give the poor abandoned pup a second chance at life.

He filled out the adoption form, and within a week, he brought Keto home.

A Good Few Weeks

Joel and his new best friend got on like two peas in a pod over the next few weeks. Joel bathed the dog and got him new toys and even a top-of-the-line dog bed. Things couldn’t be better.

Now that Joel was wearing his work uniform, the veterinarian understood the gravity of the situation. She had underestimated Joel, but she now knew that he was a police officer.

She had unethically dismissed Keto just because of his breed. She could get into a lot of trouble for that.

Thankfully, Joel’s occupation gave him an edge that she didn’t see coming.

Looking At Him

Joel brought Keto in a moment later, and the woman, Dr. Taretto, reluctantly examined him. After a few minutes, she put him on an IV and other medication. She said that he would be fine. It was a minor heatstroke.

Joel didn’t like being in the same room as her, but he just wanted his dog to be alright.

After an hour, he headed back to his car.

Unexpected

As Joel got to the reception, he braced himself for the bill. Vet fees weren’t often very cheap. But that’s when the receptionist told him that it was all in the house. He didn’t understand.

Had he misunderstood the veterinarian, too? It made him think that maybe everyone deserves a second chance.

Just like he had given one to Keto when he adopted him, maybe he shouldn’t be too harsh on the vet. Everyone deserves a second chance.
