An Unforgivable Mistake

John and Jim grew up thinking they were fraternal twins, but they soon learned that the truth about their birth was just two blocks away from where they lived.

It was something they would never question because there was no chance of it being any other way.

It would take decades for the truth to be revealed, and it would put the spotlight on a reputable institution.

Best Friends

John and Jim Lambert were from Cincinnati, Ohio. They were the only children of Sue and Olson.

When they were very young, they would do everything together, and so they formed a close bond, as most twins do.

They both loved movies, and neither John nor Jim knew that their lives would resemble a movie in the coming months.

Don’t Look Alike

When they started school, they were constantly teased by the other kids, who told them that they weren’t twins because they didn’t even look alike.

But that did not discourage the brothers.

There was no question that they were twins; they had the same birthday, after all, and no one was going to separate them.

All Grown Up

As the brothers grew up and made their way to college, things would turn around for them.

They remained close, but each had their own group of friends.

They would usually all hang out together, and the brothers would again encounter the same round of questions about them really being twins. Jim was getting tired of it.

It was one day in particular that Jim would lose his cool. They all went out for drinks when one of their mutual friends took things too far.

John and Jim decided to leave well enough alone. They didn’t know if what they were speculating was even true, and they didn’t want to upset their parents with questions.

Someone Familiar

It would be two years before the brothers would be hoisted into the spotlight. Their friend Amy would see someone familiar at another college.

She had been visiting her cousin at Xavier University when she spotted someone familiar walking down one of the hallways.

She called out to him, but there was no response. Amy decided she needed to find the guy. He looked just like John. Was he secretly taking classes here as well?

The Mystery

Amy searched the college grounds and eventually found the guy she was looking for. It had taken her most of the day.

She called out to him, “Hey, John, I didn’t know you went to Xavier as well.” The guy just looked at her.

He was clearly confused. He didn’t want to be rude, so he just said, “Hi, um, I’m not John. My name is Danny.”

Mistaken Identity

Amy couldn’t believe what she was hearing. The guy standing in front of her was clearly her friend John. Was he just being mean and trying to ignore her?

Amy then replied, “Oh, I’m sorry. I thought you were someone else.” The guy just smiled and went on his way.

Amy was dumbfounded. But then she thought about something she read years ago: each of us has a doppelganger somewhere. The guy was certainly John’s doppelganger.

Telling John

Amy decided to let the guy be on his way. But she knew she had to tell John what she saw. She knew he was a twin, but maybe they were triplets.

When Amy got back to her dorm room, she decided to call John to tell him what she had seen at the other college. Surely he needed to know.

This could be a long-lost family member of his, and he wouldn’t even know. She had to tell him.

The Dinner  Date

Amy invited John out to dinner that evening. They were good friends, and people always thought they were dating.

They went to a nice Italian restaurant downtown, and she thought John looked really nice. They had a lot in common and didn’t waste any time talking about everything they could. Then Amy decided to bring up the topic of the stranger she saw.

Something Of Importance

Amy felt weird about revealing who she saw, but there was no turning back. This had to be done. It could be important.

She told John that she saw a guy who looked identical to him at another college when she visited her cousin.

She said she thought he should know. But John’s response was not what Amy was expecting.

John looked at her and then did something Amy was not expecting. He burst into fits of laughter. Was John okay?

John couldn’t believe what Amy was telling him. It was impossible. Of course, there are people that look like you, but someone that is identical?

That was not possible. He had a twin. He was tired of this. He didn’t need more drama in his life.

Refusal

Amy insisted. She wasn’t trying to make him uncomfortable and she didn’t want to cause any drama in his life, but she saw what she saw.

She then told him she was willing to prove it.

But he had to come with her to the college, and they would then look for the guy. John refused her offer.

A Compromise

John told Amy she was surely mistaken, but Amy was adamant that he should go and see for himself.

John said it was crazy. He wasn’t going to drive all the way to another college for nothing.

He needed proof first. He asked Amy if she could possibly get a photo of the guy. That proof would then convince him to go.

Plan Of Action

Amy thought about it, she knew it would be hard, but there was no other way. She had to convince John that this guy was his double.

She contacted her cousin and asked her to please try to take a clear picture of her classmate.

It would prove difficult and weird for her cousin, but eventually, Amy would get exactly what she wanted.

The Photos

As Amy was lying in bed that evening, her phone buzzed erratically. She had just settled down with a book to unwind from her busy day.

When she saw who it was, she smiled. It was her cousin and she sent the photos of her classmate.

This was it. Amy clicked on the photos and they were perfect. It was just what she needed to convince John.

The Reveal

Amy couldn’t wait to see John. She finally had the proof he had asked for. She waited for him outside on a bench.

When John approached her, she could see he was hesitant to see the photos. She handed him her phone.

John was speechless, he couldn’t believe it. He was looking at a carbon copy of himself.

John was amazed. How could this be? Who was this guy that looked exactly like him? He needed answers.

Since the brothers shared a dorm room, it was hard for John to keep something like this from Jim.

He knew Jim was always asking questions, and if he found out about what he was researching, it would break his heart.

John decided to take some time during the following day to work in the library away from the prying eyes of his brother.

But that night, as John lay in his bed, his mind began to wander. He glanced at Jim’s bed and found him sound asleep.

Back when they had first talked about the issue two years ago, John didn’t want to believe it. It broke his heart that Jim felt like he wasn’t really part of the family. 

John never wanted to admit it, but he was right. Jim looked nothing like their parents or their grandparents.

To top things off, he wasn’t like any of them either. Naturally, Jim was far more reserved than the rest of the family.

John lay on his bed with his eyes wide open. As he stared at the ceiling, he couldn’t help but wonder about all of it.

Since he was a kid, he always thought that it was strange that Jim’s nose was so prominent compared to his.

John felt like he was betraying Jim by thinking about all of this.

For as long as he could remember, John and Jim had told each other everything.

Jim told John about the first time he ever kissed a girl, and John told his brother about the time he accidentally threw a baseball through someone’s kitchen window.

He couldn’t imagine what it would do to Jim if his theory turned out to be true.

Although he never showed it, Jim was a sensitive soul. What if his entire life turned out to be a lie?

“Hey, are you up? I can’t sleep.” As soon as he sent the text, his eyes drifted back up to the ceiling. He was dealing with too many conflicting emotions, and he didn’t know what to do.

His phone pinged a second later.

“Hey Johnny,” Her response read, “I can’t sleep either. Are you okay?” John was relieved to have someone like Amy in his life. Sometimes, he felt like she was one of the only people that got him, other than Jim.

“Yeah, I’m alright. I just don’t know what to make of all of this,” He responded.

He felt guilty for being so curious about Danny. Jim deserved better.

Hoping And Praying

He awaited her response. He just needed someone to tell him that it would all be alright in the end. Eventually, he received another response. 

“I understand. But just give it some time and do some research. Maybe things aren’t as bad as they seem,” She tried to reassure him.

John hoped that she was right, but soon, he would discover how bad things really were. 

No Matter What

John thanked Amy for all of her help. It was nice to know that he had someone like her around. She truly was an amazing friend. 

Placing his phone on his bedside table, John rolled onto his side.

He could see his brother’s sleeping silhouette on the opposite side of the room. He knew that no matter what, he would love Jim endlessly. 

Sound Asleep

Before he knew it, he was sound asleep, but his dreams were haunted by the truth. That night, he kept dreaming about Jim and Danny.

Even in his sleep, he feared for what was to come.

Jim was the most important person in his life, and he hoped that the truth wasn’t as bad as it seemed at that moment. 

The Next Morning 

As soon as John awoke the following morning, his thoughts were consumed by what he had seen the day before. He opened his eyes and found that Jim’s bed had been made. 

Sitting up, he rubbed at his tired eyes.

“Hey, you want some coffee?” He heard from across the room. Jim was standing there, pulling a shirt over his skinny form. 

A Bitter Taste 

John’s chest felt heavy. He tried to swallow the bitter taste in his mouth, but he just couldn’t.

He hated waking up stressed. Jim was all smiles that morning if only he had known the truth. 

“No, thanks. I have a ton of work to do this morning,” John only half lied. He had to do some research, and he knew he had to do it somewhere far away from their shared dorm room. 

Jumbled Thoughts

His plan was still to go to the library. Lying to his brother didn’t feel right, but he knew that it was something he had to do. He was trying to protect him.

He hopped out of bed and quickly got dressed. His only hope was to have some answers by the end of that day.

But where was he supposed to start? His thoughts were jumbled as he left their room in a hurry. 

Operation Investigation

After one of his classes, John quickly made his way to the library. This was one of the days that he had some time off, and he decided to use it to work on his secret project.

Why were the hallways so long, he thought. He needed to sneak away quickly before Jim accosted him.

He was almost there; he could see the library, and then he heard his name. He stopped dead in his tracks.

Own Language

It was Jim. He knew he couldn’t get away from him. They were not only brothers but twins. Sometimes, one knew what the other was thinking.

John and Jim had made up their own special form of communication when they were young. They loved to see people’s faces when they spoke their own language.

“Hey John, we’re late for our study session in the library, let’s go. John couldn’t believe that Amy had saved him like that. He owed her his life.

The Search Begins

John told Jim he had to go and would see him in the dorm room later that evening. It was time to figure out what was going on.

Amy accompanied him to the library. He didn’t know where to start. He typed in their names and surnames, followed by their date of birth and the name of the hospital on the pc.

He did not expect the information he received.

A Tedious Process

John looked through all the newspapers in archives from the year they were born. It was a long tedious process but he was determined to get to the bottom of it.

They were scrolling through when John finally came across the newspaper that had the correct month and year of their birth.

He quickly went to the birth section and then his blood ran cold.

Nothing Out Of The Ordinary

It was right there. Their names, and date of birth with a picture of their parents in the hospital. The proof was all there.

Nothing out of the ordinary. Everything was printed in black and white as he had expected.

He showed Amy and she too saw the evidence in front of them. But she still wasn’t convinced.

No Mystery

Amy knew there had to be another explanation. John saw the photos of the guy and now the birth records were saying a completely different story.

Maybe there wasn’t anything to it at all. It was just a lookalike.

It happens all the time, she thought. It was time to bury the mystery so that everyone could get on with their lives. Or so she thought.

Giving Up

John decided to give up and go back to his dorm. There was no mystery. Their lives were completely normal and he was not going to get Jim all worked up about nothing.

He called Jim and asked if he wanted to relax and watch a movie with him that night.

But Jim had other plans. John’s world would soon be rocked again.

Home Alone

When he arrived at the dorm room, it was empty. The place smelled like cologne and it meant only one thing, Jim went out partying.

There was a note saying not to wait up and John ordered pizza, switched on a movie, and settled in for the night.

However, it would be a night he would never forget.

Party Time

Jim met some friends at a frat party downtown. He had been working so hard over the past few weeks, he needed to have some fun.

The party venue was packed and he walked to the kitchen to grab a drink before going outside to the pool area.

When he went outside, he saw someone unexpected.

Amy was there. He didn’t know she was the party type. He thought she was more like John who studies hard and doesn’t really do parties.

He walked up to her to say hi. They talked for a moment and Jim asked if she and John managed to get their studies done in the library.

The guy was laughing and having a good time. It couldn’t be, Jim thought. It was a school night, he would never go out, let alone to a wild frat party.

He walked over but then the guy walked the other way with his friends.

Jim thought it was strange, but he could’ve sworn that he had just seen his brother, John.

He must be having a good time, Jim thought. Then he continued chatting with his friends. It was 2 am when Jim finally made his way to the dorm room. He was exhausted.

As he opened the door, he saw John watching a movie. “Hey man, guess you left before me. Glad you had a good time. I’m gonna get in, ‘night.”

John was confused by what Jim was saying. Maybe he had too much to drink. But then he thought, there must be one other explanation for his brother’s ramblings.

Meet And Greet

The next day, he arranged to meet with Amy again. He was determined to get to the bottom of this mystery once and for all.

Amy was a trustworthy friend so he asked her to accompany him to her cousin’s college.

When they arrived, John could feel his heart racing. He was going to meet this guy, and he had no idea what to say to him.

Where Could He Be

Amy asked her cousin if she had seen her classmate today, and when her cousin said no, John felt a bit of anxiety hit him.

He didn’t want to delay this any further. He needed to see this guy now.

They searched the campus grounds high and low but didn’t find him. Then, just as they were about to leave, Amy spotted him sitting on the grass reading a textbook.

As they approached him, he didn’t look up. He kept reading. John thought it was something he would do.
