Top 5 Plants With Healing Properties

Mother Nature is the ultimate healer. Before we had pharmacies, we used plants to cure ailments. Hundreds of them have magical healing properties, and at the top of the list are those you can easily find at the grocery store or in the garden. Before you use or consume plants as natural remedies, play it safe and consult with your physician or a certified naturopathic doctor.

Think kindly of dandelions when you see them invade your lawn. According to Dr. Oz’s website, consuming dandelion roots and leaves helps detox the liver and fight viruses, inflammation and bacteria. Unless your garden is 100 percent organic, pick up fresh dandelion greens and roots at a natural supermarket. Use the greens and roots in your salads or other dishes that feature veggies. Or enjoy the benefits by drinking dandelion tea.

4 Mint

Mint, or specifically peppermint, is one of the best-smelling plant remedies out there. Use the leaves in a tea to help relieve symptoms related to the common cold, such as coughing, throat pain or sinus problems. If you feel nauseated or have heartburn, gas or an upset stomach, a cup of mint tea may help. Use peppermint oil in a steam bath to help treat congestion or a cough. Apply the oil to your skin to help relieve itchiness, muscle pain or to repel mosquitoes.

3 Ginger

The spicy root we know as ginger contains chemicals that work in your stomach, intestines, brain and nervous system. Eat candied ginger or drink ginger tea or ginger ale to help relieve nausea, gas, diarrhea and appetite loss. For relief, apply a bit of juiced ginger to burns. Apply ginger oil as a massage ointment when you have sore muscles or arthritic joints. Ginger supplements offer the same benefits without the spicy taste.

2 Garlic

Garlic is great for flavoring your food and warding off vampires. According to WebMD, the cloves also have medicinal properties because they contain allicin, the property that gives garlic its distinct smell. Scientific studies found that when consumed, garlic can enhance your immunity and help those with heart conditions, such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure, heart disease and atherosclerosis. Get the health- and immunity-boosting benefits of garlic with supplements, which give you all the perks without the bad breath. You can also use garlic to treat fungal infections, such as athlete’s foot. Simply mixed a mashed clove of garlic with some honey to make a paste. After washing your feet, apply the paste for 15 minutes and rewash your feet. Repeat this process every day until your itchy ailment is gone.

1 Coconut

Coconuts do more than flavor water and dress up desserts. The oil in coconuts offers multi-fold benefits, according to “The Dr. Oz Show” website. The high levels of lauric acid in coconuts can help elevate “good” HDL cholesterol levels. The medium chain triglycerides break down fats in the liver, making you burn fat more efficiently. For its heart-healthy benefits, use coconut oil as a substitute for butter when you bake cookies or season popcorn. Use it to stir-fry entrees or fry ripe plantains. The antioxidants in coconut oil slow the aging process, and the vitamin E moisturizes your skin and hair. Simply melt the coconut oil by placing a jar of it in warm water, then apply a few drops to your skin or hair. Look for food-grade coconut oil in your supermarket; this type is fit for consumption and use on your skin.
