The expression “down-to-earth” is generally used to describe someone who understands the realities of life and common plights of regular people. Many celebrities get caught up in being famous and lose touch. It takes real conviction and resolve to stay humble and down-to-earth in a profession where fans and the media often build you up as a larger-than-life character.
5 Robert Downey Jr.
Television and film star Robert Downey Jr., whose film honors include the “Iron Man” and “Sherlock Holmes” franchises, is down-to-earth in many ways. First, the actor has struggled with very real-life addiction issues for much of his life that have impacted his career. Downey isn’t a money-hungry actor either, having indicated prior to the release of “Iron Man 2” that he wasn’t a big fan of sequels because he felt they were too commercial.
4 Carrie Underwood
Country music star Carrie Underwood’s reputation as down-to-earth supports the notion that a less conventional path to stardom may help celebrities keep it real. Underwood was unknown before winning the 2005 season of “American Idol.” As of 2013, she is a Grammy winner and one of the biggest names in country music. Yet the Oklahoma native has kept her small town personality, causing author KY Henderson to call her “one of the most down-to-earth celebs we’ve ever met” after a March 2010 photo shoot for a “Cosmopolitan” magazine feature article.
3 Jennifer Garner
Actress Jennifer Garner, best known for her lead role in the television show “Alias,” backed off from her own celebrity to raise a family and support her husband Ben Affleck, who is also known as a relatively down-to-earth guy. The couple married in 2005. Garner is regularly seen in public without makeup—the true sign of a down-to-earth female celebrity.
2 Emma Watson
In some cases, celebrities choose a down-to-earth approach almost in rebellion to the typical behaviors of the rich and famous. This seems like the motive for British film star Emma Watson, best known as Hermione Granger in the “Harry Potter” film series. Watson appeared very critical of excessive spending and the materialistic nature of many celebs in a June 2013 “Daily Mail” article.
Despite being one of the most popular, commercially successful and revered singers in the world, Adele remains very down-to-earth. Much of this is attributed to her relatively rough upbringing in North London. The star regularly interacts with her audiences at concerns, including telling jokes. She has also maintained close friendships with her “regular” friends from before she became famous. Adele has a “normal-sized” figure and is confident and secure, which appeals to many of her female fans.
