Celebrities are good at playing make believe. They pose for cameras, they act in movies, they serenade us, they dress up as fashion models and provide the voices for our favorite cartoons. Sometimes, the fantasy spills over into their actual lives, and they enter into romantic endeavors that are, well, less then genuine. Here’s a list of celebrity flings that were probably staged in the first place.

5 Cher and Gregg Allman

Twelve days after she got divorced from Sonny Bono, Cher was divorced again — this time from Gregg Allman. Their nine-day marriage began just three days after the split was made official between one of the biggest power couples in the history of music: Sonny and Cher. Even true love ends, and longevity doesn’t necessarily mean anything, so the reason that their romance was an obvious ploy is less about the fact that it lasted a week and a half and more about the reason Cher says she quit Gregg—she was shocked by his drug and alcohol use. Shocked? He’s an Allman Brother. They’ve had benders that have lasted longer than nine days.

When Katy Perry and Russell Brand came out as a couple, comedy fans everywhere scratched their heads and wondered how a man known for his brilliant intellect and wit could wind up with someone who wrote the lyric “think I need a ginger ale/that was such an epic fail.” But hey, Katy is a bombshell and anyway, love is blind—or at least shortsighted. Fourteen months later, they were single again.

After beating out rivals Mandy Moore and Christina Aguilera to become America’s undisputed pop princess in the late ’90s, Britney Spears skyrocketed to international fame on the back of hits like “Oops! I Did it Again” and “Baby One More Time.” By 2004, however, her popularity was waning. After breaking up with Justin Timberlake, she needed something to put her back on top. She married childhood friend Jason Alexander in Vegas, and stayed married—for 55 hours. Her bid to regain the limelight worked, but not necessarily the way she wanted. The next few years would see a sad and public downward spiral that included a shaved head, another divorce, sobriety lost and an “accidental” flash.

2 Dennis Rodman and Carmen Electra

As his new-found friendship with small-statured North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un proves, Dennis Rodman has a thing for much littler people, but Carmen Electra? When 6 foot 7 NBA all-star Rodman and 5 foot 4 Electra announced they were a couple, it looked, well, staged. Although Rodman still insists the love was real, their whopping 10-day marriage didn’t do much to quell rumors that the romance was in fact a faux-mance designed to renew the spotlight on the small woman and small forward.

1 Rock Hudson and Phyllis Gates

It is now common knowledge that tall, dark, handsome 1950s heartthrob Rock Hudson was gay, and it is rumored that it was no secret to Hollywood insiders then. But in a time when homosexuality was outlawed by law and custom in virtually all of America, Hudson’s agent, Henry Willson, was tasked with hiding it from the public. A marriage was staged between Willson’s apparently unwitting secretary, Phyllis Gates, who got wise and divorced Hudson three years later in 1958.
