The Top 5 Most Bizarre Music Videos

Many music videos follow a specific formula. They feature back-up dancers, bright lights and cars. They often feature the singer in exotic locales with wind blowing her hair. You won’t see any of that here. These five music videos are packed with special moments that will leave you scratching your head and wondering what you just watched.

5 “Ponponpon” – Kyary Pamyu Pamyu (2011)

Imagine a Japanese version of Pee Wee’s Playhouse, except instead of Pee Wee there is an incredibly cute Japanese girl who force-feeds you acid. With that image in mind, you are somewhat ready for the weirdness that is the video for “Ponponpon” by J-Pop star Kyary Pamyu Pamyu, who is so bizarre she makes Lady GaGa look like Margaret Thatcher. Words can hardly describe this video, so just prepare to see lots of 3D computer animated eyeballs, sharks, donuts and armored tanks floating around while Kyary Pamyu Pamyu dances in a room full of her toys.

4 “Heathen Child” – Grinderman (2010)

A naked woman sits around in a bathtub of milk and trips out and is visited by a bunch of scary monsters and Nick Cave playing dress-up. That about sums up the “Heathen Child” video by Grinderman. Frontman Nick Cave and his bandmates dress up in Roman gladiator armor and kill people with lasers that shoot from their eyes and energy balls that launch from their crotches. The video is loaded with surreal and shocking imagery that will definitely blow your mind.

3 “Evil Boy” – Die Antwoord (2010)

Honestly, videos from this rambunctious South African rap duo could fill out this entire list, but “Evil Boy” is perhaps their most mind-boggling video to date. Most of the video is set in a subterranean dungeon adorned with graffiti and populated by a freaky looking troll and band members Ninja and Yolandi Visser. Ninja sports a prawn arm a la the film “District 9” for most of the video, while Yolandi switches between a filthy jumpsuit and a fur coat made of white lab rats. Somewhere in the middle, guest rapper Wanga spits out a verse about his junk, while surrounded by several phallic statues.

2 “Land Of Confusion” – Genesis (1986)

This video is pure and unadulterated nightmare fuel from the 1980s, especially if you have an irrational fear of puppets. The entire video is set inside of Ronald Reagan’s dreams, but he is a puppet. Nancy Reagan is a puppet. Also the entire band and everyone in the video is a puppet. Not just cute and cuddly Muppets, either: incredibly scary and distorted-looking puppets. The puppet version of Phil Collins is the most horrifying of all, and you may never be able to erase the sight from your memory. To make things worse, there are lots of severed puppet heads and other weird moments, including cowboy Ronald Reagan riding a dinosaur.

1 “Fish Heads” – Barnes and Barnes (1979)

This video from 1979 is the grandaddy of bizarre music videos. The video follows a young Bill Paxton walking down the street just going about his day. Everything seems normal, until Paxton stops off to buy a bunch of fish heads from the market. He then proceeds to take the fish heads to the movies, throw a birthday party for them, and attempt to have a telephone conversation with one. He dresses them up and even puts lipstick on them.
