They made their way to the aisles, and completed their shopping. There was a hesitant smile on Jake’s face as he approached Sarah’s register.

He Returns

She greeted him warmly. “Back for more diapers?” Sarah asked with a warm smile, relief flooding through her. Her friend listened intently, equally intrigued by the peculiar situation.

Together, they watched as Jake unloaded his baby items on the counter, his demeanor unchanged. He had a baby pacifier and a cute onesie this time.

A few customers stopped to watch the unfolding drama. Sarah tried to calm the situation and Jake, but he wouldn’t stop crying.

“Hey, Jake,” she said softly. “I know things might be tough right now, but we’re here to support you. If you ever need anything, just let us know.”

She put her arms around him, and tried to comfort him. “It’s not that, you don’t know,” the young man whimpered. He wiped his face and looked at his mother with puppy dog eyes.

His mother came forward and held his hand. “I think it’s time they know the truth, mom,” he said quietly. His mother shook her head in agreement.

Jake’s eyes filled with gratitude as he nodded silently, unable to find the words to express his thanks. “I’m thankful for your help, but I haven’t been honest with you,” he started.

He looked at Sarah and said, “There’s something you should know about me Sarah,” he looked down at the floor embarrassed.

New In Town

Sarah was caring and told Jake that they could go sit outside if he wanted. But he said no. “I think it’s time that everybody knows the truth,” he said.

Just then the manager came through, he saw the group of customers standing around Sarahs till. His brows raised in curiosity.

Usually, he would have dispersed the crowd, but today, he was overcome with a sense of humanity and he couldn’t help but marvel at the act of kindness that was taking place in his store.

A Grateful Lad

Sarah introduced the manager to Jake and his mother and he greeted them with a smile. “Thank you for the generosity, sir, you have a great store,” he said.

The manager responded with “Thank you for visiting us, and always let us know if there is anything you need,” he patted him on the back.

Jake nodded, “This voucher is going to help me more than you know sir,” he said. “But first, there is somebody that I want you to meet,” he said, “Lisa, can you come here?”

The Girl Comes In

Just then the young teenager with the baby came through, she stood next to Jake. The baby girl cooed happily when she saw him.

Jake stood up and held the girl around the waist. “Everybody, I would like for you to meet Lisa and Dottie, my girlfriend and my baby,” he said with a smile.

Sarah almost jumped out of her skin. All along the girl wasn’t his neighbor, it was his girlfriend. And that was his own child.

He Made A Mistake

Jake went on to explain the financial predicament they were in. He was just eighteen years old, and Sarah was fifteen.

They were reckless and Sarah fell pregnant. Her parents disowned her and told Jake to take care of her and the baby.

Jake had no choice but to drop out of school and find a job, which he did, but then he lost his job and couldn’t find any other work for some time.

Being Honest In Public

There wasn’t a dry eye in the store as Jake iterated his sad story. A few customers sniffled and continued their shopping.

Sarah tried to talk some sense into Jake about not giving up. “You have to keep trying, you have a baby to take care of,” she convinced him.

On Wednesday Morning, Sarah saw a familiar face enter the store, it was Jake. He smiled when he saw her.

Sarah noticed that his face was tired and weathered. “What happened?“ she asked him. Jake told her that the baby got sick, and he also started a new job but got fired the same day because he had to take the baby to the hospital.

Just then the manager walked past them, he stopped at the storeroom and looked at Jake. “Just the man I wanted to see,” he said and tapped Jake on the back.
