These days we’re bombarded with photos of stars looking perfectly airbrushed on the covers of magazines. It’s enough to make anyone feel frumpy, but it’s important to realize that most of the pictures we’re seeing are nipped and tucked with the help of technology.

Modern-day stars seem to keep healthy lifestyles for the most part. Some of the stars of Old Hollywood had crazy notions of what constituted a good diet. Marilyn Monroe ate raw eggs for breakfast – not OK. Still, some old-school stars knew how to stay healthy.

5 Sophia Loren

Curvy, beautiful Loren loved food and wasn’t ashamed to admit it. “Everything you see I owe to pasta,” she famously quipped. She followed a Mediterranean diet of fresh veggies, pasta, and red wine.

4 Grace Kelly

Gorgeous Grace said, “I try to avoid (diets) as much as possible. A crash diet would make me nervous and bad-tempered,” she continued. “I do enjoy good food but try to eat correctly, the right things. I am aware of the importance of having well-balanced meals. We have whole-meal bread and whole rice, and I tend to avoid sugar.” Go girl.

3 Cary Grant

Handsome leading man Grant was really into therapy and psychological healing. Of diet Grant has said, “The subconscious, I believe, holds all knowledge. If you really think thin, you’ll get there. You won’t need a diet or medical plan. The subconscious will tell you what to eat or pass up.” Interesting, and almost like a New Age diet plan. Just be positive and focus on what you want and it will come. Did Grant invent “The Secret” before “The Secret” even came out? Sounds like it. Most of us have to put a little more work into our diets than just thinking our way thin, but Grant has a point – it’s mental as well as physical.

2 Gloria Swanson

You might think of caviar and excess when you think of Swanson, who played crazy Norma Desmond in Sunset Boulevard. In reality, she was almost militant in her healthy eating habits. She even said, “I was in a business of make believe to entertain people but I’ll be darned if I want to eat make believe food!” She maintained a macrobiotic diet, rarely drank alcohol and didn’t smoke cigarettes. No meat, yoga, and clean living? Sounds a little like Gwyneth Paltrow. Swanson’s recipes included potassium broth and “Double Corn Soup”:

  • 2 chopped onions
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • ½ cup corn meal
  • 4 cups water

Tamari to taste
Granted, it doesn’t sound amazing, but it’s better than drinking Diet Coke and eating Funyons, right?

1 Greta Garbo

Beautiful, mysterious Greta Garbo didn’t follow crazy fad diets or laze around all day eating bonbons and sipping sherry. She admitted to daily workouts. She loved “tramping about in the woods” which these days would just be called hiking. She was also a longtime vegetarian. Not bad for an old Hollywood star.
