Does your hair need a little love? If so, you don’t need to spend a lot of money to get healthier-looking strands. Try these DIY hair mask recipes that use all-natural ingredients you can pick up from the grocery store. In fact, you might already have most of them in your kitchen cabinets.

Raw ingredients like coconut oil, honey, yogurt, avocado, strawberries, apple cider vinegar and even mayo are all effective ways to hydrate and clean your hair. Hair masks with natural ingredients are quick to make and much cheaper in the long run than buying expensive products. Here’s a list of all the ingredients you’ll need to whip up these natural DIY hair mask recipes.

Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is a green beauty MVP. You can clean your teeth with it, cook with it, use it as a body moisturizer and even use it as a hair conditioner. It’s great as a moisturizer in this hair mask or on its own to tame fly-aways and smooth out frizz. Because coconut oil is full of healthy fats, it’s actually able to fix hair breakage better than store bought products. Not to mention those healthy fats will also help regulate your digestion and support hormonal balance when you use it in your meals.

Honey

Want shinier, glossier-looking hair? Make sure to include honey in your hair masks. Honey is a natural humectant that helps retain more moisture in your hair. It will also strengthen your hair follicles and help your hair grow faster. Full of antioxidants and antibacterial properties, honey gets rid all that unwanted product build-up to reveal cleaner, even lighter-looking hair.

Apple Cider Vinegar

If you suffer from dandruff or an itchy scalp, make sure to include apple cider vinegar in your hair masks. You can even rinse your hair with it before shampooing to soothe your scalp. Apple cider vinegar helps reduce dandruff, thanks toits potent antibacterial and anti-fungal qualities. It gets rid of product build-up without stripping your hair and scalp of natural oils.

Loaded with potassium and vitamins B and C, this natural ingredient will also give you stronger, more nourished strands. Because of its acidity, mixed with water, apple cider vinegar balances the pH of your scalp, bringing it back to a healthy, flake-free state. When product build-up is eliminated, your hair color can look significantly lighter. It’s a great ingredient for blonds to use to keep their color from looking brassy.

Eggs

Aside from being the main ingredient in a lot of my favorite meals, eggs work overtime by being super-effective in both hair and face masks. Full of protein, fatty acids and vitamins A, D and E, eggs give your hair serious shine. A lot of the same nutrients found in egg yolks are also found in healthy, shiny hair, which is why eggs are so effective as an all-around excellent natural beauty product. Applying egg yolks directly to your scalp and massaging them in will strengthen your hair follicles and help hair grow significantly faster.

Avocado

First things first, avocados are a fruit not a vegetable! Did you know avocados are actually part of the berry family? Hard to believe, but it’s true. Like eggs, avocados are full of healthy fats, protein and vitamins. They will strengthen, moisturize and help promote hair growth. Aside from using whole avocados in a DIY hair mask, you can also use avocado oil as an everyday leave-in conditioner. Avocado oil is higher in fatty acids than extra virgin olive oil. It will protect your hair from heat damage and keep it shiny all day.

Yogurt

Yogurt is one of the best natural ingredients to help fight frizz. It deeply conditions your hair, giving you confidence to wear it down even in high humidity! Full of protein, healthy fats and lactic acid, yogurt is another ingredient that promotes hair growth and shine. Make sure to buy organic, full-fat yogurt to get all of the frizz-fighting benefits.

Strawberries

Strawberries are packed full of folic acid and vitamins B5 and B6, which all help prevent hair loss. This natural ingredient is one of the best to use if you want to thicken your hair. It helps prevent hair thinning and treats alopecia. The high level of antioxidants found in strawberries also protects your cell membranes and fights dandruff. And, bonus: You can always snack on what doesn’t go into your DIY hair mask recipe!

Mayo

Although it might sound kind of gross to put mayo in your hair, this ingredient can be used to define curly hair and even gets rid of lice! Mayonnaise gives you straighter, smoother hair by deeply conditioning and getting rid of frizz. It can also help your hair color last longer by sealing damaged cuticles, preventing the color from fading.

Olive Oil

Olive oil has a high level of omega 3 fatty acids and vitamin E. It’s one of the best natural ingredients to use to get silky-smooth hair and is often used by top hair dressers to combat fly-aways. Olive oil has been used for centuries as a beauty product because of its excellent anti-aging and moisturizing qualities.

Due to chemical treatments, heat styling, environmental toxins and even too much sun, it’s important to keep your hair as hydrated as possible. Say goodbye to dry, damaged strands.

No matter your hair type, the following all-natural masks will nourish your scalp, repair heat damage and help eliminate product build-up.
