Hombre No Falta Al Trabajo En 27 Años, Le Recompensan Con Un Caramelo

Decepcionante 

Hoy iba a ser un día memorable. Pero después de recibir su “regalo”, la sonrisa se le borró rápidamente de la cara. 

Mientras la cámara rodaba, revisó los objetos uno a uno, sacándolos de la bolsa de plástico transparente y mostrándolos a la cámara. ¿Se trataba de una broma de mal gusto? Cuando los internautas vieron el vídeo, se volvieron locos. 

Kevin Ford

Kevin Ford, de 54 años, nació y creció en Sheffield, Alabama. Cuando se trasladó a Las Vegas en busca de trabajo a los 24 años, conoció a la mujer de sus sueños y se asentó para formar una familia. 

Aunque no ganaba mucho dinero haciendo hamburguesas en el Burger King del aeropuerto internacional McCarran de Las Vegas, a su mujer no le importaba. Lo único que necesitaban era amor. O al menos eso pensaba Kevin.

Empleado Leal 

Cuando el matrimonio de Kevin empezó a desmoronarse pocos años después, fue como si de repente le hubieran quitado la lana de los ojos. Pero ahora tenía dos hijas a las que cuidar. 

Kevin siguió trabajando en Burger King durante años para poder mantener a sus dos hijas. Iba a trabajar todos los días, incluso cuando estaba enfermo o se había peleado con su mujer toda la noche y apenas podía mantener los ojos abiertos. No tenía ni idea de cómo le pagarían después de 27 años así.

Problemas En Casa

Incluso durante años de problemas matrimoniales, Kevin se mantuvo firme. Era una roca. Puso comida en la mesa y sacó adelante a sus hijas mientras la relación con su mujer se deterioraba. 

Él ya no sabía quién era ella, pero ya no era la mujer con la que se había casado. Había cambiado. Tras gestarse durante unos años, las cosas llegaron a un punto crítico. 

Una Batalla Por La Custodia

Quedó muy claro que la mujer de Kevin no estaba capacitada para criar a sus hijas mientras él trabajaba muchas horas para mantenerlos. Las cosas no podían seguir como hasta entonces. Se divorció de su mujer y entró en una fea batalla por la custodia de sus hijas. 

Aunque su vida personal era un caos y estaba llena de juicios, Kevin no faltó ni un solo día al trabajo. Poco sabía él, Burger King todavía esperaba más.

Padre Soltero

Después de la larga batalla por la custodia, el juez pudo ver que la ex mujer de Kevin no podía cuidar de sus hijas. Reconoció las relaciones extramatrimoniales y el abuso de sustancias. Aunque no es habitual que un padre gane la custodia en lugar de la madre de los niños, Kevin ganó el derecho a quedarse con sus hijas. 

Ahora era un padre soltero con dos hijas a los que cuidar él solo. Sus hijas eran su mundo y haría cualquier cosa por ellas. Aunque luchó, se las arregló de alguna manera. Bajó la cabeza y prevaleció.  

27 Años De Servicio

Todos los días, Kevin llegaba puntual al trabajo para empezar sus largos turnos. Sólo podía pasar tiempo con sus hijas por las tardes, pero esos eran los momentos por los que vivía. 

En las buenas y en las malas, a pesar de la enfermedad, de un divorcio complicado y de docenas de batallas judiciales mentalmente agotadoras, se arrastraba hasta el trabajo para hacer hamburguesas en Burger King. Lo había hecho durante 27 años. Seguramente, su duro trabajo acabaría dando sus frutos.

Ya No Era El Mismo

27 años después, Kevin, de 54 años, había pasado por muchas cosas. Ya no era el mismo joven fresco que empezó a trabajar en Burger King hace tantos años. Estaba cansado. 

Afortunadamente, todas sus hijas habían superado el bachillerato; la más joven se había casado y le había dado dos nietos preciosos. Kevin, por su parte, se había vuelto a casar felizmente y ahora tenía dos hijos más. Muchas cosas habían cambiado, pero una seguía siendo la misma. 

El Aumento Del Coste De Vida

En 1995, Kevin habría empezado con un salario mínimo de unos 5 dólares la hora. Ahora, en 2022, el salario medio de un empleado de Burger King ronda los 9.86 dólares. 

Si tenemos en cuenta el aumento del coste de la vida, el salario mensual de Kevin apenas había crecido, y no había ascendido en sus 27 años como empleado leal. ¿Cómo se lo pagaría Burger King?

El Regalo

En su 27º aniversario como empleado de Burger King, Kevin recibió una bolsa de plástico transparente. 

No parecía prometedor, pero Kevin siempre se esforzaba por agradecer lo que le habían dado. Un compañero de Burger King grabó con su teléfono su reacción mientras sacaba uno a uno los artículos de la bolsa. ¿Qué sacó?

¿Qué Había En La Bolsa?

La sonrisa de Kevin se desvaneció de su rostro, traicionando sus verdaderos sentimientos mientras intentaba mostrarse agradecido. Sacó los objetos de la bolsa de plástico transparente y los mostró a la cámara. 

Un vaso reutilizable de Starbucks, una bolsa de caramelos, una entrada de cine. Cuando el vídeo se hizo viral, internet se volvió loco. 

Vídeo Viral

La bolsa de plástico que contenía los insultantes regalos tenía una pegatina de HMS Host. HMS Host es la empresa matriz de la multimillonaria cadena de restaurantes. 

No pasó mucho tiempo antes de que el vídeo de los decepcionantes regalos de Kevin llegara a un subreddit llamado ‘A Boring Dystopia’, con la leyenda “Este hombre dedicó 27 años de servicio a Burger-King y fue recompensado con baratijas por valor de 27 dólares”. Los internautas no podían dejar de hablar de ello. 

Vergüenza

“Una pensión habría sido mucho mejor que una bolsa de caramelos”, comentó un usuario de Reddit. “Nadie compró nada. Esas son las bolsas de regalo que se ofrecen en eventos especiales o por los gerentes de contratación. La empresa compra cajas de esas cosas para regalar”, escribió otro usuario, horrorizado. 

“Burger King, como todos los demás lugares de comida rápida, son ladrones corporativos que no se detendrán ante nada para sacar provecho de todos, por no hablar de aprovecharse de los trabajadores jóvenes, razón por la cual nunca como en ninguno de estos lugares”, dijo un usuario. 

Gratitude Genuina

El vídeo también se hizo viral en TikTok, donde Burger King recibió críticas mordaces de los espectadores. A los espectadores les rompió aún más el corazón la reacción de Kevin a la bolsa de regalo: fue positiva y expresó genuinamente su gratitud. 

Finalmente, el vídeo llegó a la hija de Kevin, Seryna. A Seryna se le rompió el corazón cuando vio a su trabajador padre aceptar el insultante regalo después de dedicar más de la mitad de su vida a la empresa. Tenía que hacer algo.

Intervenir

Seryna decidió crear una página GoFundMe para su padre. Había trabajado muy duro durante muchos años para que ella y sus hermanas pudieran ir al instituto y a la universidad. 

Ahora quería devolvérselo. “Me llamo Seryna. El hombre del vídeo es mi padre. Ha trabajado en su trabajo durante 27 años y sí, nunca ha faltado un día al trabajo”, escribió en la página de GoFundMe.

“Empezó a trabajar como padre soltero cuando obtuvo mi custodia y la de mi hermana mayor hace 27 años”, continúa Seryna. 

“Luego, cuando nuestra familia creció y él se volvió a casar, siguió trabajando aquí gracias al increíble seguro médico que le proporcionaba esta empresa porque estaba sindicada. Así, sus cuatro hijas pudieron ir al instituto y a la universidad con cobertura sanitaria completa”.

De Corazón A Corazón

“Mi padre sigue trabajando aquí porque, aunque parece joven, está a punto de jubilarse y dejarlo le costaría la jubilación”, explica Seryna.

“En ningún caso pedimos dinero ni él lo espera, pero si alguien quiere darle la bendición, le encantaría visitar a sus nietos”. No esperaba mucho: el objetivo eran 200 dólares para que Kevin pudiera comprar un billete de avión para ver a sus nietos. Mientras tanto, el polémico vídeo seguía acumulando millones de visitas.

Aprovechado 

“¿Por qué se celebra esto? Gran tipo, pero denle 2 semanas libres con paga al menos”, escribió un TikToker disgustado. Otro señalaba que “lo triste es ver cómo las grandes empresas se aprovechan de gente buena como él”.

Mientras que la mayoría de los usuarios estaban horrorizados por la ‘bolsa de regalos’ de Kevin, algunos comenzaron a culpar a Kevin por su propia situación, incluso llegando a culparlo por no haber dejado Burger King antes y buscar otro trabajo.

Juicio Online

“¿Por qué alguien trabajaría en BK durante 27 años? Entiendo que algunas personas estén en la pobreza, PERO ¿27 AÑOS? Es tiempo más que suficiente para buscar algo mejor”, escribió un usuario. 

“No sé, simplemente no puedo imaginar ponerme tan bajo como para permitirme a mí mismo hacer un trabajo tan degradante. No deberían haberle dado nada, esto es insultante”. Una vez que una persona había emitido su juicio, otros usuarios comenzaron a dogpilear también.

Culpas

“¿Por qué alguien se quedaría en BK durante 27 años? Ahí está el problema. No se puede hacer lo que hizo este tipo y esperar tener éxito. Si te pasas 27 años sirviendo hamburguesas recalentadas de baja calidad, esto es exactamente lo que pasa”, comentó otro usuario. 

“No es astrofísica. A las empresas no les importas y no te tienen lealtad; trátalas de la misma manera. Un trabajo así debería ser sólo un peldaño en una escalera, no una carrera”. Pero, por supuesto, para Kevin no era tan sencillo.

Slave To The Wage

Kevin had stayed in his position with Burger King because it was unionized. He benefitted from great health insurance that extended to his children while they went to school as well. 

Of course, he had weighed up the pros and cons of working at Burger King, but in the end, he chose good healthcare coverage instead of a higher-paying salary. Burger King also had him under their thumb for his retirement – which he would lose if he left. And he’s not the only American in this predicament.

A Broken System

A recent survey by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants revealed that 80% of the American workforce would rather choose a job with healthcare benefits than a job offering a 30% higher salary.

The rising costs of healthcare have also meant that those in a lower or middle-income bracket haven’t really seen a salary increase since the early 2000s. That’s because the rising cost of healthcare keeps eating into the raises they do get. Kevin certainly wasn’t to blame for being part of a broken system. But he had no idea things were about to change.

Getting Noticed

Kevin’s video of his underwhelming gift was still getting traction – and so was Seryna’s GoFundMe page. Kevin’s story was even getting recognition from celebrities, and it wasn’t long before the goal of $200 was shattered. 

Comedian David Spade was among those who saw the TikTok video, and he donated $5,000 and sent Kevin a personal message via Instagram. Kevin, who is a huge fan of David’s, couldn’t believe what he was seeing. But this was just the beginning.

Forced Into A Corner

Burger King had noticed the bad press they were getting and rushed to do some damage control. Knowing that a video like Kevin’s could really hurt their brand, they issued a formal statement to LADbible on the matter. 

“The Burger King brand and its many franchisees nationwide are committed to recognizing and celebrating the achievements of the thousands of people serving across a wide range of roles — all dedicated to providing our guests a world-class experience,” the statement said. But they were only making themselves look even worse.

Looking Even Worse

“Following review with this location’s franchisee, we’ve learned that this video depicts a Team Member in receipt of a peer-to-peer reward in recognition of a short-term positive performance/experience,” Burger King’s statement continued. 

“The franchisee offers its team members a robust employee recognition program, which includes the recognition of tenure milestones and monetary awards.” So, the paltry ‘goodie bag’ Kevin had gotten for 27 years of service wasn’t even from Burger King’s higher management – it was from a team member.

Outpouring Of Support

Nevertheless, the damage to Burger King’s brand had been done. Kevin’s story elicited sympathy from people all over the globe – everybody could relate to how he had given more than half of his life to a big corporation just to get a slap in the face. 

Meanwhile, the donations from kind strangers were pouring into the GoFund me account. It wasn’t long before it had amassed a whopping $250,000 in just two days… and it’s still climbing!  

Online Celebrity

Kevin had become an online sensation almost overnight. He was getting calls to do interviews with the media and even asked to appear on TODAY. 

“I’ve been crying for about two days now. It’s just incredible,” he said in an interview. “I just go to work and try to have fun and laugh and make other people’s day good. It’s like I’ve been in a dream for almost two days now. It’s just so beautiful and awesome. It really is.” Little did he know, the biggest surprise was still coming. 

Finally, Some Appreciation

Kevin got more than 8,000 donations from kind strangers. Finally, he was getting the recognition he deserved – but it was ironic that he wasn’t getting it from Burger King. 

“For all those years, you feel unappreciated, but you get up just like everybody else. You do your job, and for somebody to show this appreciation is just overwhelming,” he said on the TODAY show. 

Thankful

When Kevin was asked what he’s going to do with all that money, he said his top priorities were visiting his daughter Seryna and her kids, as well as paying off some of his bills. 

Kevin hadn’t seen his granddaughters, who are six and eight, for four years. But the producers of the TODAY show had already taken care of that for him…

Surprise Reunion

While he was doing his TODAY interview, Kevin was greeted by his daughter and granddaughters, who made a surprise appearance. Kevin Immediately burst into tears: “I haven’t seen you guys in so long,” he choked as he hugged his family.  

After Kevin’s story went viral, many people working in the fast food industry came forward with their own harrowing stories. While some seemed fake, others, like the one below, left a bad taste in people’s mouth, showing just how much disregard these big corporations have for their employees.

Working For A Big Corporation 

Dana had been working at a big corporation fast food chain for ten years before she decided to call it quits. Receiving an hourly pay of ten dollars, she’d only wished to have a stable way to pay her bills and take care of her kid. 

A Missouri native, Dana had been through a lot in her life. But the experiences she endured through the ten years she worked at the fast food restaurant showed her what her employer truly cared about. 

Raising A Son 

Dana came from a low-income family in Missouri. She had her son when she was eighteen, and although she loved him very much, having him meant she had to find a way to support him. 

Her baby’s dad wasn’t in the picture, so Dana had to find a job to raise her son alone. As any mom would, she started looking for work to help her make ends meet. 

Starting Life  

Fresh out of high school, there were a few things Dana could do to have a steady paycheck. The most notable was flipping burgers and making hotdogs at the restaurant, which, at first, was a delightful job. 

Dana had hoped to work there for two or so years before moving on. She had expected to join her friends in college and give her son the life he truly deserved. But the world had other plans for her. 

Her Hope

Dana’s hope to leave the restaurant came crashing when she realized the world was a crueler place than she’d once thought. She couldn’t find any other job with her age and lack of higher education.

She thought about taking loans to go to school, but that would still require her to work to support her son. She was stuck at the fast food restaurant.

Ten Years 

Ten years passed, with Dana still working at the restaurant. But after several life-dangering situations, and without any substantial promotion or pay increase, she decided enough was enough and hung up her apron. 

After Kevin’s story took the world by storm, she came forward with her story, explaining how much flipping burgers endangered her life almost every year. 

No Regard 

In the post, she wrote, “I resigned from my position at a fast food restaurant after I realized my employers have no regard for human life.” 

She gave the premise for her story, stating that although a lot of violence was involved around the restaurant’s location, her employer never did anything to help. Here’s the story. 

It Happens

Dana, like many minimum wage workers, woke up early in the morning and got ready for work. After dropping her boy off at school, she took the bus to her workplace to begin her day. 

The day was going on great until a customer came in to order food. He was tall and well dressed, with a flashy car parked at the lot. “One look at him, and I knew he was trouble,” Dana wrote. 

A Scary Moment  

The man had several tattoos on his arms and fingers, each of those markings harkening to gangs Dana always saw on tv. The man seemed impatient as he made his order. 

He waited a few minutes for his food and handed over his card before grabbing his bag. Looking to be done with the situation, Dana quickly passed the card through the machine. All hell was about to break loose. 

Card Declined

The card declined, mainly because the machine didn’t cater to the particular card brand the man was using. Dana tried to explain this to him, but he ground his teeth and slapped his fist against the counter, asking her to try again. 

A shaky Dana did, and when the card declined again explained that the machine didn’t support the brand of card the man was using. 

Get The Manager

“I told him to wait for a second as I fetched my manager,” Dana wrote in her post. The manager came rushing in, but he stopped in his tracks when he saw how imposing the man looked. 

He explained what Dana had already told the man about the machine, hoping to defuse the situation finally. He had no clue what was about to happen next.    

It’s Over

The man grunted and snatched his card from Dana’s manager’s fingers. He hissed about the two insinuating that he’d stolen the card, and slapped his order off the counter, spilling it onto the floor. 

With a grunt, he stomped out of the building and into his car. Dana let out a breath, turning to serve the rest of the customers waiting in line. She thought it was over. 

Get Down!

Dana was taking her next order when the rest of the restaurant went up in screams. Next, she heard glass from the windows shatter as a loud and continuous screech took the air. 

“Get down!” one of the customers shouted. Everyone was sprinting for their lives, hands over their heads as they ducked under tables and booths. 

Don’t Close It

The man’s car did a donut in the parking lot before driving off. Dana couldn’t believe it. In the post, she says her manager got a call from the higher-ups instructing him not to close the restaurant for the rest of the day.

“Although no one was hit, my employer didn’t care about the mental scarring that comes with such an ordeal,” wrote Dana. What she revealed next was genuinely heartbreaking. 

Stay At Work

“My coworkers and I were required to work on take-out orders for the rest of our shifts,” Dana wrote. She explained that most of them were beyond scared, and one of her workmates couldn’t even talk for the rest of the week.

Regardless, her employer demanded she finishes her shift as required in her contract without a care in the world about her wellbeing. “And that’s not the only time something like that has happened,” shared Dana.

She’s Happy

“I have been through similar scenarios working at that place, some worse, some less frightening,” she wrote. “At this point, the sound of gunfire is no longer scary.”

After ten years of the same, Dana finally quit. She currently runs her own food truck in a safer neighborhood, where she has two employees working with her. “I am happy, finally. I treat them as my children. I would never let anything happen to them,” she wrote.
