Jordan stared at her through the window, and that’s when, for the first time, he noticed something wrong. In all of the days he had passed her through the window, he hadn’t seen it.

He fought back tears. How would society have let this happen?

He knew that he had to do something to help.

2. Springing Into Action

He felt his heart start racing as soon as he noticed the problem, and was just a humble utility worker, but that didn’t mean he’d stand idly by and let the situation continue.

Jordan couldn’t let this happen to the old woman. If she couldn’t defend herself, then he would.

He sprang into action and headed towards the door.

3. No Reservation

Jordan headed straight towards the door to the restaurant. He felt a white-hot rage inside that would drive him to do anything to help the old woman. But there ended up being someone in his way.

He got to the restaurant, where there was a greeter on the way. “Do you have a reservation, sir?” They politely asked.

He didn’t have time for this.

4. Getting Through

Jordan couldn’t believe what the greeter had just said to him. He stared at her and said, “Of course I don’t! I don’t have time for this. Please let me through.”

But the greeter wouldn’t go down without a fight.

Jordan pleaded with her. He tried appealing to her ideals and said that it was important. He needed to help someone.

5. Entering The Restaurant

The greeter was stubborn and didn’t want to let him inside with a reservation. Eventually, after a long back and forth, she finally relented.

She told him that he had to be quick, or her boss would fire her. Jordan planned on being fast.

He had to get to the old woman quickly. Time was running out.

6. Confronting Her

Jordan passed the greeter and looked around. He saw diners dressed in formal wear. Clearly, he didn’t belong in a place like this.

He had dirt on his face and hands and had been sweating from a hard day’s work.

But he wouldn’t let the stares stop him. He was focused on his mission, and he would do anything to help her.

7. Crying

By the time he had gotten to the old woman he’d seen through the window, the tears had already escalated to the point that they were freely falling onto her lap. She wasn’t okay.

Jordan stood in front of her table – she didn’t notice him. She was lost in her own world. He had to do something quickly. He decided to sit across from her and said, “Hey, sorry to bother you, but it’s okay. I’m only here to help.”

But he had no idea what he was stepping into.

Henrik Everson studied architecture in Gothenburg, Sweden, before finding a stable job in the United States as a contractor. He moved there after turning twenty-five and never looked back.

The walk cut through a strip of stores that were for people who earned a lot more money than Jordan. He saw upmarket clothing stores and fancy dining experiences. One such place had a big window where he could stare into the world he was locked out of.

He always saw hungry patrons eating exotic meals and dressing in fancy formal wear.

He never paid much attention to the restaurant, but he couldn’t help glancing inside.

15. Noticing A Regular

The faces of the patrons blurred together in his mind. But that’s when he actually recognized one patron. They must have been a regular, but they stood out amongst the crowd.

It was an elderly woman. She’d always be laughing and happy. She reminded him of his mother.

It had become a treat to see her radiant energy every week when he walked past her.

Like clockwork, he would see the woman eating dinner there every Thursday. But she was never alone. She ate with an elderly man that he could only assume was her husband.

He enjoyed seeing people living and laughing together. It was a breath of fresh air amongst the deadpan patrons he normally saw.

“No, but I’m meeting someone inside,” He said.

The greeter looked at his clothing and said, “Okay, but next time, please wear something more formal.”

Jordan got to the table the old lady was sitting at with her husband and introduced herself.

“Hello, young man. Don’t think I haven’t noticed you staring at us every week. I’m Barbara, and this is my husband, Tom.”

Jordan introduced himself, but there was still a question on his mind. What did they want?

20. A Friendly Conversation

Barbara explained to Jordan that they didn’t want him to stop staring and didn’t want anything from him. They just wanted to meet him if he was going to be seeing them every week.

It was unexpected, but the friendly conversation was nice. He had to get to work and bid them farewell.

He thought that would be the last he spoke to her, but he was dead wrong.

She was wearing a black dress and a small hair clip of fabric, too. He knew what it meant, even if no one else did.

30. In This Together

Barbara smiled at his comforting words and asked him to join her for dinner. They could celebrate Tom’s life together. Even though Jordan didn’t know them very well, he could tell they were good people. But he wasn’t ready for the twist.

At the end of the dinner, Barbara admitted to Jordan that she knew him better than she admitted. She was actually a good friend of his father, and he asked her to keep an eye on him.

Jordan had one more person to call family in his new city, and even though Barbara had just lost someone special to her, she was glad she had a member of the Everson family to comfort her.
