Start this 2018 fresh, making good on the “new year, new you” mentality. How? You can start by stepping out with a trend-right trim in January. No matter what your NYE plans entail — an intimate house party, or a decked-out, glittering bash — a head-turning new haircut is the perfect end-of-year accessory to complete your festive look.
To recap: Last season we watched the celeb-beloved “lob” go viral, while countless other celebs went under the scissors, revealing bobs, shags, and fringe galore. More than a few of last season’s top styles will carry-over into the new year: wet-looking hair, deep side parts, and both high- and low-pony’s, to name a few.
All the while, we’ve kept our eyes trained on Hollywood’s leading ladies in hair for sightings of 2018’s Top 5 celebrity hair trends to come. Here’s what we’ve discovered!
In case you haven’t heard, bangs of various eye-grazing styles are simply on FIRE right now. In particular, face-framing curtain fringe is having a major moment in hair.
The style gets its name from the drapes-like look — shortest in the middle, with longer tendrils falling towards the outer edges of your face. These fabulously French additions can even help balance out your facial features, elongating square face shapes with their tapered trim. The best part is, once they grow out, simply push ’em to the side a la Emma Roberts.
As the starlet models above, these babies were made for hand-parted hairstyles that put your natural textures on display — flyaways and all.
4.) Natural Textures
Elsa Hosk, the Victoria’s Secret Angel and top model du jour, posted this messy-pretty photo on her Insta. The trend in question is all about texture — namely, the perfectly imperfect look of her brushed-out curls. While last season saw sleek, straight and shiny manes take center-stage, 2018’s aesthetic calls for all-things-natural. Forget heat tools and straighteners; embrace your hair au naturale instead.
Messy waves? Check. Past-their-prime curls? Check. Listen: celebs even brought “undone” hairstyles to the fore with a bevvy of both casual and fancy renditions. In 2018, perfection is being redefined — and it’s all about your hair’s raw, unfiltered beauty. After all, primping is so last season.
3.) Non-Lob Lengths
Medium-length haircuts became a thing thanks to all the grown out lobs in Hollywood. If you opted in on the lob trend, you’ll find yourself with mid-length strands on your way back to long locks. Model Rosie Huntington-Whiteley proves that an in-between-lengths ‘do can still look glam.
Meanwhile, a few scissor-happy celebs took their lobs in the other direction: the bob. Coupled with a blunt bang, Nina Dobrev’s sophisticated cut is just one of the many bob + bangs combos to consider trying in 2018. Expect to see as many varieties of the bob/bangs as you can possibly imagine (i.e. curly bangs, deep side-parts, wet-looking hair, teeny-tiny pony’s, and more!).
But here’s the thing: Part of why these in-between-lengths cuts are taking hold is due to the residual grow-out from the pixie cut trend. Just like the one seen on Zendaya above, celebs love taking the signature short haircut to brand new lengths — meeting those ultra-short bobs halfway.
2.) Modern Shags AKA “The New Taylor”
After taking a hiatus from the press following a few high-profile disasters (i.e. break-ups, rebounds and feuding with Kimye), our girl Taylor is more than back. The pop princess we all know and love shed her perfectionistic reputation and re-emerged with a brand-new style. Ladies and gents, the old Taylor might be dead, but the new Taylor is officially an icon.
Bidding adieu to high-maintenance ‘dos, Taylor’s shaggy, grown-out lob says she DGAF. Similarly, if you’d like to shed your “girl next door” charm in favor of some rebellious edge, a modern shag is one way to do so.
1.) Platinum Dye-Jobs
None other than Kanye West is behind 2018’s top hair trend. After Kim Kardashian West stepped out with this brand new hair color, she revealed the look’s true inspiration on her Instagram account. Her admission came in the form of a caption, stating: “I’d go blonde for that d.” Needless to say, the post left fans all in a tizzy — even as they admired the gorgeousness of her icy new look.
While Rapunzel-esque locks are also trending in 2018, it’s the grunge-beloved look of bleached-out strands with grown-in roots we’re talking about. Selena Gomez herself recently debuted a textured blonde lob that stunned.
So there we have it: In 2018, bleached-soaked strands have officially gone glam.
