Don’t Call It Adorkable: the 5 Best Moments in New Girl Season 1

OK, maybe you think the Fox show New Girl isn’t your thing. Zooey Deschanel bounces around all wide-eyed like the love child of Katy Perry and Hello Kitty, and they had that ridiculous “Adorkable” ad campaign last year. When I started seeing the bright yellow billboards around town with her cutesy image and that word… “Adorkable,” I almost puked. But I gave it a chance and you know what, the show is hilarious. Get over yourself.

It’s also not just a “chick show,” despite what a lot of people think. The guy characters have some of the best parts of the show! The main character Jess (Deschanel) lives with three dudes and the dynamic is what makes the comedy work. Nick is the underachieving slacker who tends bar and pines for his ex. Winston is an ex-overseas basketball player trying to find a job, and Schmidt is the control freak douche you can’t help but love. Season 2 just started, but let’s check out the best moments from Season 1 – there’s no “Adorkable” in sight, I swear.

5 And Some Quotes

OK it’s not so easy to TELL you that something is funny, so how about some actual lines from last season as proof? Here goes: “These people are disgusting. I’ve never been more flaccid in my life!” – Schmidt at an old folks’ home. “Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day? No, a summer’s day is not a bitch.” – Nick reading a poem he wrote to his ex-girlfriend Caroline. “You are making a huge, life-ruining mistake by moving in with a woman who turned you into an agoraphobic, turtle-faced borderline alcoholic.” –Jess trying to convince Nick not to get back with his ex. “Neil, tell us about yourself. Anything we should know, aside from the fact that you responded to our Craigslist ad with a fax?” –Winston interviewing a potential (crazy) new roommate. “You know me, I’m only attracted to guys who are afraid of success and think someone famous stole their idea. I like an underdog.” – Jess

4 “Secrets”

Ladies man Schmidt didn’t always have a six-pack and one chin. This episode flashes back to “Fat Schmidt” from his college days and it’s pretty hilarious. He seduces and makes out with a girl wearing a T-shirt that says “I Am Claire” (whatever the hell that means) while they’re listening to the song “Let’s Get It Started.”

3 “The Landlord”

Nick and Jess are total opposites (she’s a peppy optimist, he’s basically Charles Bukowski lite), but they’re both stubborn as hell. They meet their creepy landlord Remy, a guy that looks like Nick Nolte after a bender. With crazy eyes. Jess thinks Remy means well and just needs friends, and Nick is convinced he’s a mass murderer waiting to strike. When Jess invites Remy to dinner, he winds up trying to rope them into a bizarre threesome. Being stubborn as hell, neither Jess nor Nick wants to act scared so they almost go through with it… until Winston comes home.

2 “Bad in Bed”

Ok, this is probably one of the funniest episodes from last season. Justin Long plays Jess’ new boyfriend Paul – he’s about as dorky as she is. After six years of only having sex with ponytail guy (poor Jess) she tries to seduce Paul and it’s totally absurd and wrong. She watches a bunch of porn, dresses in this crazy S&M ribbon outfit, and seduces him by talking like a 1940s newsie character. Watch it – unless you’re dead inside, you’ll probably laugh.

1 “Kryptonite”

In this episode Jess accidentally breaks her roommates’ TV while they’re playing basketball inside. Since guys can’t live without their freaking big screen TVs, Jess has to go confront her wormy, cheating ex-boyfriend to get her TV back and keep the guys from having a meltdown. It sucks facing down an ex (especially when he has a little ponytail and wears Birkenstocks – not cool). The guys see that Jess isn’t taking it well so they all put Jess’ ridiculous, hilarious hats on their heads in solidarity, to show Mr. Birkenstock he’s not welcome anymore. It sounds silly, I know, but it’s pretty awesome.

OK so now it’s up to you – go watch the show!
