anime restaurants

Anime fans, one of our wildest dreams came to life: we can now dine in jaw-dropping anime themed restaurants and cafés!

We assure you, your inner Otaku will scream in delight when discovering their delicately composed menus and the detailedly prepared dishes, cakes, and drinks! So KAWAII!!

It comes as no surprise that the majority of these anime restaurants and cafes are situated in Asia, especially Japan. Mother-land of the manga and the anime, the manga/anime concept quickly expanded into physical objects (figurines, accessories, stationery), music albums, theme parks and museums, and now, themed restaurants and cafes.

Bonus point: these anime restaurants and cafes have a certain 90’s vibe to them that we DIG!

Without further ado, here are our Top 5 Anime Restaurants and Cafes:

5.) Sailor Moon Café in Tokyo, Japan

“I am Sailor Moon, champion of justice! On behalf of the moon, I will right wrongs and triumph over evil!”

Ah, the memories! Do you remember striking the famous Sailor Moon pose and using a spatula as magical scepter? … Or was it only me?

In all cases, you will absolutely love these Sailor Moon coffees, drinks, hamburgers, lunch boxes, and much more!

This Sailor Moon Cafe is, in fact, part of a big marketing campaign to celebrate the 25th birthday of the anime. This explains why it popped up for a very determined period of time in Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, and Fukuoka. Indeed, the brightly colored menu helped spread the hype about the upcoming event and keep the conversation going.

Now that they’re closed, the anticipation for a next opening is killing the fans!

4.) Rilakkuma Café in Taipei, Taiwan

Rilakkuma is rather a well-known character than an anime persona, but we couldn’t ignore it, its themed cafe is too cute to overlook!

The Rilakkuma Café in Taipei holds its name extremely well: Rilakkuma’s name is a combination of the two words ‘rirakkusu’, a Japanese transliteration of the English word “relax”, and ‘kuma’, the Japanese word for ‘bear’. Peculiar, but extremely appropriate! You will indeed feel as relaxed as a giant plush bear on a soft cloud of sweet pastries and yummy treats!

3.) Shiro Hige Cream Puff Factory in Tokyo, Japan

Does this cute face remind you of anything? It’s Totoro, Studio Ghibli’s mascot and one of the most famous icons of the Japanese anime culture. If you roam the streets of Japan, be ready to spot this big fluffy fictional animal in the most peculiar places, like in here, baked as cream puffs and cookies!

As a matter of fact, many of the cakes in Shiro Hige Cream Puff Factory are seasonal. Shiro Hige (meaning “White Beard”) designs cakes for specific occasions and sells them over a limited period of time. Like in here, you can see some Christmas cakes and Valentine’s Day cookies. The manager of the cafe reminds us slightly of Hayao Miyazaki, the producer of Studio Ghibli, who put great effort to deliver perfect work and cherish their creations.

Speaking of which, it seems like the Miyazaki family owns the café, and that Shiro Hige’s CreamPuff Factory is the only café in the world authorized to produce and sell the Totoro Creampuffs. So if you want to eat some, you know where to head!
