The Big Day

Sarah’s stomach was filled with butterflies. The day had finally come for her to marry the man she’d loved for the last two years.

Her hair was styled to perfection, and her makeup was flawless. Their friends and family were all there, excitedly waiting for her to step through the door.

But as soon as she did, she met the groom’s eyes, a wide smile stretching across her face. But her smile dropped when she saw who stood beside him. Her life was about to change.

The Best Thing That Happened To Her

It was supposed to be the happiest day of Sarah Jennings’s life. Robert was the best thing that ever happened to her. At least, that’s what everyone said.

But if everyone thought he was so perfect for her, why did she feel so uncertain? “It’s normal. Everyone gets a little freaked out before the wedding,” Her sister, Susan, said.

Susan slowly pulled the comb through her sister’s hair, watching her carefully in the mirror. “Yeah, I suppose so. Everything will be fine,” Sarah told her sister and herself.

Time Was Ticking

Susan helped her slip into her gown and held her hand as the beautician did her hair and makeup. The hours were slowly ticking by. It was almost time.

“You look so beautiful. Robert is going to fall in love with you all over again when he sees you,” Susan said, squeezing her sister’s hand gently.

Sarah smiled weakly, her stomach twisted into tight, painful knots. She was certain that everything would be okay once she saw his face. But she was in for a surprise.

The Best Man

Every now and then, Sarah would peek out of one of the windows, watching as the venue slowly filled with guests. They were all there to support them.

She could see Robert in the distance. He looked handsome in his tux as he stood beside his groomsmen. But that was when she noticed something.

A man stood beside her husband, one she didn’t quite recognize from afar. Was he the best man she’d heard so much about?

Observing Them

But as Sarah stared out of the window, observing the people below, she had no idea that the time had finally come.

Soon, she noticed the guests walking into the church. They were waiting anxiously for the bride to arrive in her gorgeous white gown.

“Sarah,” Susan said from behind, a gentle smile on her face. When Sarah turned around, she said the words she’d been fearing. “It’s time.”

One By One

Sarah arose from her seat, suddenly noticing the shakiness in her legs and the sweat on her palms. She didn’t know if she was ready for this.

She and Susan slowly left the small building and walked toward the church. She glanced down at her dress, ensuring that it looked perfect.

Her bridesmaids stood outside of the church, waiting for her to arrive. As soon as she did, they began walking into the church, one by one.

A Familiar Face

Before long, it was Sarah’s turn. She twisted her arm around Susan’s, flashing her sister a nervous smile before the pair stepped through the massive double doors.

Everyone stared in awe as the beautiful bride entered the room. She put on a brave smile as she caught sight of Robert’s face. But then, her eyes trailed to the man standing beside him.

As soon as she saw those familiar eyes staring back at her in astonishment, she paused. Suddenly, she knew what she had to do.

A Hopeless Romantic

Born and raised in Seattle, Washington, Sarah Jennings had always been a hopeless romantic. As a teenager, she always dreamed of finding her prince charming.

She watched every single rom-com available, imagining that she was the main protagonist. But it wasn’t until college that she fell in love for the first time.

She was just nineteen years old at the time. But she could never forget the day she walked into Philosophy 101 and saw his face.

The Boy

He sat alone in the back of the room, his eyes puffy and hair messy from a lack of sleep. Sarah was caught off guard by his gorgeous face.

Slowly, she stumbled into the room and sat in one of the middle rows. But she couldn’t help but glance back at him ever so often. Who was he?

That day, as Sarah left the classroom, she couldn’t help but think about him as she ventured off to her next lecture.

The Life Of The Party

The following few days were all the same. She would walk into the room and find him in the back, talking to the people who sat around him.

They all seemed entranced by him. As usual, Sarah would take a seat in the middle of the room, just close enough to hear his voice.

She didn’t know what it was about the dark-haired, blue-eyed boy, but she was captivated by him. But one day, something unexpected happened.

His Usual Seat

Pexels

It was two weeks after she’d first seen him. Her stomach was filled with butterflies as she prepared to enter the room and see his face.

But he wasn’t there that morning. His usual seat in the back was occupied by some girl Sarah didn’t recognize. She couldn’t help but wonder where he was.

It was a few minutes later that he stumbled into class. “Sorry I’m late,” he said to the lecturer, and then, his eyes landed on Sarah for the first time. He decided to sit next to her.

Introducing Himself

“Hey,” He said with the slightest smile on his face, noticing the red tint in her cheeks. “I’m Christopher.”

He stuck out a hand, which she quickly shook. “I’m Sarah. It’s nice to meet you,” she said shyly. That was the day everything changed.

When she walked into class the next day, she couldn’t help but realize that he was the one staring this time. His eyes hardly left her for that entire lecture.

Asking For Her Number

After weeks of stealing glances at one another and smiling whenever they got caught, Christopher finally had the guts to ask Sarah for her number.

She was beyond excited as she typed the number into his phone. They texted for a while, and before she knew it, she was spending multiple nights a week hanging out with him.

The pair fell in love almost immediately, and she was certain that she had found the man she’d wanted for all those years. But she had no idea what was coming her way.

She Was Certain

They stayed together for three whole years, and in that time, Sarah was certain that he was the man she would someday marry. He was everything she’d ever wanted.

But one night, her heart broke into millions of pieces. “I just think we should take a break,” Christopher said. She knew he was going through something tough at the time.

“No, I don’t want us to break up. I love you,” she cried. Tears had begun spilling from his blue eyes, too, at that point. “I just need to find my feet again, alone,” he said.

He Left

That night, they ended their relationship. But Sarah never really knew why. As far as she was concerned, they were perfect for each other.

Although she was a mess at the time, she always thought they would get back together. But one day, he stopped showing up to classes.

“He transferred to a different college. Apparently, his mom is sick, and he wants to be closer to her,” one of his friends said. But why did he never tell her?

Moving On

Pexels

For months, Sarah was caught up on the boy who had stolen her heart at only nineteen years old. From time to time, she considered calling him, but she never went through with it.

After a few months, she realized that he wasn’t coming back, and she had to come to terms with it. Eventually, she graduated and moved to the city, but she never forgot him.

She tried dating casually for a few years, but no one ever captivated her the way Christopher did. But that changed when she met Robert at a work function.

Making It Official

Sarah met Robert Hall when she was twenty-five years old, and they hit it off right away. They dated for a while before he made their relationship official.

He was a successful businessman who promised to take care of her no matter what. After years of being miserable, she was grateful to have a man like Robert in her life.

He was like a breath of fresh air. He made Sarah forget all about the boy who’d broken her heart when she was just 22 years old. But only for a short while.

They Loved Him

Pexels

Slowly but surely, Sarah fell more and more in love with Robert and introduced him to the people she loved most in the world.

Her friends and family loved Robert. They thought he was funny and charming. “I think he’s perfect for you. He’s a good man,” her older sister, Susan, said.

Sarah smiled, grateful for her sister’s words. Robert was a good man, and she knew she deserved a wonderful man by her side.

He Proposed

They were surrounded by family the night he proposed, and Sarah said yes without a second thought. Everyone cheered as they kissed.

But as everyone rushed to congratulate Robert, leaving Sarah alone for just a second, something, or someone, came to mind.

That was the first time she’d thought of Christopher in months. She wondered what he would say if he knew she was engaged.

A Simple Question

Pexels

Sarah shook those thoughts from her mind the second they entered. Over the next few months, she and Robert planned every last detail of their June wedding.

“I think I want to ask Susan to be my maid of honor. Is Johnny going to be your best man?” Sarah asked, paging through a book of wedding cakes.

“No, actually. I sent my childhood buddy a text this afternoon. He recently moved to New Jersey. He’ll fly over for the wedding and be my best man,” he said proudly.

His Best Man

Sarah had never heard of this man before, but she couldn’t wait to meet him. “His name is Chris. He booked a flight to land in Washington the morning of the wedding,” he said.

“That’s awesome, honey,” she smiled. But as soon as her fiance left the room, her mind began to wander again. She thought of Christopher and his blue eyes.

The closer they got to the wedding, the more she thought of him. She felt so guilty each night, sleeping beside Robert while she thought of Christopher.

One Week Left

Pexels

The week before the wedding was the worst. Sarah couldn’t stop feeling tense and uncertain. She kept wondering if she was doing the right thing.

Did Robert deserve to marry a woman who was still thinking about the boy she hadn’t seen in five years? She decided to speak to Susan about it.

“I just keep thinking about him. I feel like I’m betraying Robert every time he pops into my mind,” she cried. But Susan shook her head, rubbing a hand across her back.

Heart To Heart

“Sarah, you haven’t spoken to this guy in five years. Do you really think you still have feelings for him, or is this the wedding nerves talking?” Susan asked.

Sarah stared at her sister for a while before burying her head in her hands. “I don’t know. I don’t know what’s going on. Maybe it is just the nerves,” she said.

But before Sarah knew it, it was the morning of her wedding, and she was sitting in a room in her white dress, her heart racing in her chest.

Watching Him

Sarah stared out of the window at the people below. But she couldn’t stop staring at the man standing beside her husband. The man who’d flown to Washington for their wedding.

Soon, she noticed the guests walking into the church. They were waiting anxiously for the bride to arrive in her gorgeous white gown.

“Sarah,” Susan said from behind, a gentle smile on her face. When Sarah turned around, she said the words she’d been fearing. “It’s time.”

Walking In

Before long, it was time for Sarah to enter the church.

As soon as she saw those familiar, blue eyes staring back at her in astonishment, she paused. Suddenly, she knew exactly how she felt.

It Was Him

Pexels

Everyone stared as Sarah froze in the middle of the church. She couldn’t rip her eyes away from the man standing beside her soon-to-be husband.

All along, Robert’s childhood friend, Chris, was her first love, Christopher. Christopher stared at her with the same strange look in her eye that she had seen all those years ago in that classroom.

“I- I can’t do this,” she said. Confused, Susan looked up at the groomsmen, her eyes finding him immediately. “Oh my gosh,” she gasped. That day was about to take a terrible turn.

Running Out

Pexels

Sarah’s bouquet dropped to the floor as she repeated those same words aloud. “I can’t do this,” she said as tears streamed down her face.

Sarah turned around and ran for the door. Everyone stared in shock as Robert ran after her. He was sick with worry. “Sarah, wait!” he yelled after her.

Gently grabbing ahold of her arms, he pulled Sarah close and embraced her. “What happened? What’s wrong?” he asked. But he didn’t expect her answer.

Admitting Everything

Pexels

“You deserve so much better than me. I can’t let you go through with this wedding. I still have feelings for him,” she cried. Robert was confused, but then she told him everything.

Stunned, Robert stared at the woman he loved, knowing that he couldn’t love him back. “You’re the girl he’s been hung up on since college?” he said quietly.

“I am so sorry,” Sarah cried. But she was surprised when he pulled her into a tight hug. “Hey, it’s okay.

A Good Person

Pexels

Sarah was taken aback by this. “I love you, and I want you to be happy,” he said as she apologized again and again.

Sarah had always known that Robert was a good person, but that day, she realized just how amazing he truly was.

“I will always be grateful that I got to spend the last two years with you,” she said. But that was when he said the unexpected.

The One

“So will I. Now speak to Chris. He’s waiting for you,” he said. When Sarah turned to face the church, Christopher was standing right outside, watching her.

She squeezed Robert’s shoulder gently before turning to the man she’d never stopped loving. She smiled with tears in her eyes.

For years, she wondered who she would end up with. But at that moment, she finally knew who it was. She’d loved him all along.
