5 Star Wars Characters We Could Do Without

The Star Wars universe is filled with some of our favorite fictional characters. There’s Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, C-3PO and R2-D2. And Star Wars boasts one of the best movie villains of all time, Darth Vader. But the movies are also home to some of the most annoying creatures in the history of cinema. Need we mention Jar Jar Binks? Here are some Star Wars characters we can definitely live without.

5 The Ewoks

Yes, the Ewoks are technically an entire race of space creatures, not a single character. But as a whole, these fuzzy teddy bears are amazingly annoying. It’s obvious what they’re in “Return of the Jedi” for: to appeal to the franchise’s youngest viewers. The Ewoks are especially disappointing after the mostly dark and serious tone of the movie immediately preceding their introduction, “The Empire Strikes Back.” (That’s the best of the Star Wars movies, by the way, no matter what anyone says.)

4 Padme Amidala

We didn’t think Padme Amidala was so bad in “The Phantom Menace” and “Attack of the Clones.” You might remember that she actually does stuff in those movies, killing monsters, shooting robots, changing hairdos. But in “Revenge of the Sith”? Something happens. Padme becomes a wet blanket, spending the entire movie fretting about Anakin Skywalker’s increasingly stupid behavior. Padme spends most of her time on screen crying or dying. That’s not much fun.

3 Dexter Jettster

Dexter Jettster. Who is that? Good question. He’s actually a character in “Attack of the Clones.” You might remember that he owns a diner on the planet Coruscant and acts as an informant for Obi-Wan Kenobi. You might also remember how ridiculous he looks with his four arms and grease-spattered apron. But what’s even more ridiculous? He employs android waitresses with giant beehive hairdos. Why does a sitcom diner appear in the Star Wars universe? You’d have to ask George Lucas.

2 Anakin Skywalker

The Star Wars prequels tell the story of how Jedi Anakin Skywalker becomes the villainous Darth Vader. Too bad both actors who played Anakin—as a child and as a surly young man—were awful. The love scenes between Anakin and Padme Amidala, who eventually became Luke Skywalker’s mother, were particularly cringe-inducing. You could say that the Anakin Skywalker character—who came off as whiny, spoiled and petulant—ruined the prequel movies.

1 Jar Jar Binks

Let’s get this out of the way first: We hate Jar Jar Binks. Jar Jar first appeared in “The Phantom Menace,” ostensibly to provide comic relief. The problem? He wasn’t funny. Ever. Star Wars fans rejoiced when Jar Jar’s role was drastically reduced in “Attack of the Clones” and “Revenge of the Sith.”
