You showed up on time for your doctor’s appointment, but the doctor is running behind and you have to wait. You arrived at the airport 30 minutes early only to discover your flight is delayed. Or maybe you’re just on the train for your regular commute to work. Regardless, you’re bored and you’ve got time to kill. If you’ve got a smartphone, you’ve got the cure to boredom right there – with or without Internet access.

5 “Words With Friends”

If you’ve ever played “Scrabble,” you know how to play “Words With Friends.” You’re given tiles to place on the game board, and the game awards you points based on letters used and the placement thereof. Once you’ve played, it’s your friend’s turn to create a word with his letters, and so on. The app will notify you when it’s your turn. Don’t have any friends? Not a problem. The app will match you with a random person. “Words With Friends” is free to download and play on all platforms.

4 “Candy Crush Saga”

Mix and match fruits in combinations of three or more to earn points in these delicious puzzle games. Just as addictive as “Fruit Ninja,” although perhaps less healthy, “Candy Crush Saga” has nearly 400 levels. The app is not only available on all platforms, it syncs your gameplay, so if you start a game on Facebook you can finish it on your mobile device. Be as skeptical as you like, you have nothing to lose—you can indulge your sweet tooth for free.

3 Pocket

Sometimes you’ll catch an article online you find interesting. You’d like to read it, but you don’t have the time for whatever reason. If you put it in your Pocket, you can read it whenever you have a few minutes to spare—even offline. Pocket is integrated with over 300 apps and available on all devices, so save that long read to Pocket and you’ll never be bored waiting in line or sitting on the train. Best of all, Pocket is free to download and use.

2 “Fruit Ninja”

Unbeknownst to you, ninjas hate fruit. The fruit falls across your screen and it must be destroyed. If it isn’t—well, nothing will happen really. But if you do destroy it, you get points – and you get to kill a lot of time. Points earn you star fruit, which you can use to buy things, like bomb deflectors and extra time, that enable you to earn more points. So you can buy more things. If you looked up the word addictive in the dictionary, “Fruit Ninja” wouldn’t be listed as a definition—but it should be. “Fruit Ninja” can be experienced on all platforms for just 99 cents.

1 “Angry Birds”

If you’ve never heard of “Angry Birds,” clearly you’ve been living in a cave for the past few years. It’s only the No. 1 paid app of all time. The story is simple: Pigs have stolen the birds’ eggs and must be destroyed. Use a slingshot to launch the birds at the pigs and destroy them. If you’re too cheap to buy this time killer, there are free versions available as well, as long as you’re willing to put up with a few ads. At least eight different “Angry Birds” apps exist across all platforms, each with different themes.
