Split Ends and Dried out Hair? Follow These Tips to Repair Damaged Hair

Over time, blow dryers, curling irons, straighteners, and chemical processes can take their toll on your hair. And even though hair is technically dead, it can look even more dead, dry, frizzy, and frayed. But by giving your hair some TLC and taking good care of it on a daily basis, you can heal and even reverse damage to your hair. Here are the top five ways to get shiny, healthy hair.

5 Have your hair cut regularly

Keeping your ends clean and trimmed promotes healthy hair growth and gets rid of split ends that make your hair look unhealthy. Aim to have at least the ends trimmed every three weeks or a haircut every six weeks. If your hair style is fairly low maintenance, you can even buy a pair of trimming shears and give yourself a trim.

4 Get more vitamin E

There are a few ways to incorporate vitamin E into your hair care routine. Eating foods like tomatoes, spinach, almonds, and sunflower seeds are a great way to promote healthy hair growth from the root. You can also try supplements or fortified cereals and milks. Some shampoos also include vitamin E to help reduce the appearance of damage. Or add vitamin E to your current shampoo by squeezing two or three supplement gel caps into your shampoo bottle. Shake to mix and use as directed.

3 Protect your hair from heat

You don’t need to eliminate all heated tools from your beauty regimen forever, but you should consider abstaining from using them for a week until your hair recovers. When you do use them, make sure you hold your blow dryer several inches away from your scalp or use a diffuser. For curling irons and straighteners, apply a heat protectant spray to your hair before styling and avoid over-styling. You don’t need to clamp the tool down on your hair, just lightly apply it over the full length.

2 Deep conditioner weekly

Look for a specially formulated deep conditioning treatment and apply as directed. Usually, you’ll leave the conditioner in your hair for 10 minutes before rinsing. For hair that’s really fried, you can deep condition twice a week for the first few weeks before reducing to once a week. But in order to keep your hair from drying out, don’t wash or shampoo as often. It strips your hair of its natural oils and makes it more susceptible to breakage.

1 Use a hot oil treatment

You can add moisture, health, and shine to your hair with a hot oil treatment. Many salons and spas offer this service, but you can also do it at home. Either buy a treatment from a beauty supply store or mix some essential oil (lavender, lemongrass, sage) with some carrier oil. Apply the oil evenly throughout your hair. Cover your hair with a shower cap then wrap a warm towel around your head. Let it set until it reaches room temperature before rinsing your hair with cold water. You can perform this treatment as needed one to three times a month.

You don’t have to live with dull, lifeless hair; you can do something to fix it regardless of whether the damage is the cause of heat or chemicals. Limit your hair’s exposure to heat chemical treatments and keep it clean and trimmed, and you’ll breathe new life into your once straw-like hair.
