5 Elizabeth Taylor
Indeed it’s hard to say whether Elizabeth Taylor was more famous for her acting career or for her personal life. She won two Academy Awards and starred in such epic films as Cleopatra and Giant, but is just as well known for renouncing and then resuming her US citizenship, converted to Judaism in her late 20s, and got married a hellofalot of times. She married eight times, in fact. Twice she married and divorced her frequent co-star, actor Richard Burton, and all but one of her other marriages ended in divorce. And no, the exception was not a long, happy union: her third husband, Mike Todd, died in a plane crash.
4 Mickey Rooney
Mickey Rooney ties Elizabeth Taylor in number of marriages, and is actually beaten by Richard Pryor. But Taylor married one of her husbands twice, and Pryor married two of his wives twice. As all of nonagenarian Rooney’s weddings involved different people, he “wins,” if you want to call it that, with eight! Most of Mickey’s marriages lasted only a few years, but his most recent union has lasted almost three and a half decades! To quote the man himself: “Always get married early in the morning. That way, if it doesn’t work out, you haven’t wasted a whole day.”
3 Linda Wolfe
You have probably never heard of Linda Wolfe before now, but we’re certain that, at the very least, twenty three men knew who she was. That’s right, you guessed it: Linda Wolfe has been married twenty three times, holding a record (according to the World Record Academy, at any rate) as the most-married woman ever. And at just a little past seventy today, chances are good that the currently single Wolfe will get hitched once again, raising (or lowering) the bar for women everywhere.
2 Glynn Wolfe
Hey, where do you think that marriage machine Linda got her last name? That’s right, she took it from her last husband, the late Glynn Wolfe. The couple was married for less than a year before the 88 year old Mr. Wolfe died, and their wedding was really just a stunt. You see, whereas Linda was the most-married woman ever with her 23 unions, Glynn held the record as the most-married of all time. His wedding with Linda added the 29th notch to Glynn’s belt.
1 Chief Majak Malok Akot
OK, move over Glynn Wolfe. Glynn was married to 29 women, and never at the same time. Chief Akot was married to at least SEVENTY SIX women AT THE SAME TIME. This Sudanese chieftain fathered at least sixty five sons an almost ninety daughters. He was also reportedly rejected by at least a dozen women—had they said yes, the chief would have had nearly as many brides as he had female offspring. And we were exhausted just thinking about Glynn…
