5 Mandatory Steps of Starting and Running a Successful Blog

I’m a big fan of blogging, but you probably already knew that. If you do not blog, you might want to consider it. But before you do, there are some things you have to know and if you don’t pay attention, you might waste some valuable time learning them the hard way.

Blogging, or at least doing it well, requires dedication, like most things in life. In fact, it requires a lot more dedication than most things in life because the Web is flooded with blogs, and people have less patience than ever before, so you need to work harder to build that audience.

Here are 5 crucial aspects of successful blogging:

5 Titles Are the New Good Looks

So you know how some folks like to tell you that they care more about a person’s personality than their external appearance? Well, that might very well be the case, but no one is walking over to someone in a bar because they are a caring and compassionate person. And no one is clicking on a link to read your blog because the article is interesting. What will bring them to your blog is a compelling title.

Whether you are driving traffic from Google or social, titles are the most important part of the content. It is your face to the world, it is super important for SEO, and more importantly, a great title will make someone want to read what you have to say. Choose your titles wisely.

4 “Wait, You Seriously Expect Me to Read That? All of It?”

We live in the ADD generation and we have Twitter to thank for that. People have no time and even if they do, they like to believe they don’t. People also have zero patience and a non-existent attention span. Spit it out! Say what you came here to say, then move on. Don’t write blog posts that are 80% fluff and 20% meat.

Think about what you are trying to say and say it as concisely as possible. I am not going to give you a number of words! Fine, if you twist my arm like that. 500. Max. With the occasional exception. Yes, this post is an exception if you really must know.

3 Pro Tip: People Like Generosity

Ok, SEO folks, you might want to skip this part… Bloggers, give out links. Link to other articles, be generous and don’t ask for anything back. At least not in the beginning. I realize it is not good to link out too much unless you are getting incoming links from an SEO perspective, but instead of trying to manipulate Google by buying or requesting links to your work, link to other people’s work and in the long run, assuming that you write good content, they will link back to you. Think long term.

2 It All Comes Down to One Word…

Any guesses? That one word is value. Provide it. As much as you possibly can. Don’t do keyword analysis when deciding what to write about. Write about topics you have passion for. Write about topics you think will interest people, not Google. “If you build it, they will come.” Provide value through your content and everything else will fall into place.

1 All That Is Worth Nothing if You Don’t Have This!

Consistency! The more you put in, the more you will get out. Write a post a month, and your traffic will decrease accordingly. A post a week and you will have four times the traffic. Once a day, and, I think you get the point. More important than frequency is that you are indeed consistent. Try to write as often as possible, but make sure that there is some sort of pattern to your writing. You want to write once a week? Bad idea but do it every Tuesday morning. Once a year? Very bad idea, but make that one day a particular day on which your audience will know to check your site because you WILL be writing. If you want to take this project to the next level, write once a day or more, but do it every day, no matter what. Then you will see the results in no time.
